As if it never existed, the feast of November 29 is completely forgotten today, although for half a century many have celebrated it with all their hearts and sincerely rejoiced in it.
Many will say today that the country whose party this was, Yugoslavia, has been forgotten. That day was celebrated on Republic Day, anniversary of the Second Session of AVNOJ, on November 29, 1943 in Jajce, when the federal organization of Yugoslavia was proclaimed. The non-working days surrounding this calendar date were merged into a “usable” whole for all “workers and citizens”.
Primary school first graders were to become pioneers, and were solemnly awarded pioneer kerchiefs, as the first sign of admission to the adult world. They took the pioneering oath at that time, which has remained deeply in the memory of many even today.
Whoever wanted to get married chose this date, so weddings and festivities were common at this time of year. The newlyweds calculated that non-working days bring a large number of guests to the celebration.
UNBEATABLE “FIĆA”
“FIĆA nacionale” was an insurmountable vehicle that at the same time represented a massive progress of the working class in the direction of “motorization”. The standard of many Yugoslavs reached the possibility of driving a “flag 750”, a vehicle with a “Fiat” license, which was a symbol of that time.
An inescapable part of folklore was the slaughter of pigs, a time when many city dwellers remembered their rural origins, so they turned to relatives to fill freezers and pantries.
The smell of melted pork rinds was mixed everywhere, meat, bacon, sausages were being prepared …
The trunks of the “fixed”, “stojadina” or “tristaća” were full, and only garbage threatened, because winters still knew how to be severe and with a lot of snow. In late November, the first snowfalls were a regular occurrence and they were able to “show their teeth” seriously.
GAZELLE
A special historical event in Belgrade was supposed to take place on November 29, 1970. At that time, the road through Belgrade, the Gazela bridge, the Mostar loop and the Terazije tunnel were opened.
Although the builders did their best to complete all the works for Republic Day, the inauguration took place only on December 4. Of course, the opening ceremony was also attended by the President of the Republic, Josip Broz Tito.
Sauerkraut was also unavoidable, and the proud hosts boasted that theirs had already “arrived. A few weeks before the holidays, the cabbage heads took their place in the tubs.
“GOŠA” AND “MOSTOGRADNJA”
THE MOST IMPORTANT contractors in the construction of Gazela were “Gosa” and “Mostogradnja”. They were large and respectable companies of the time, whose experts and workers enjoyed a great reputation throughout the world. At that time, there was an anecdote that “Mostogradnja” refused to build bridges of less than one hundred meters, “because it doesn’t pay them to open a construction site for such a small job.”
There were no celebrations and piety was not to the liking of the ruling communist ideology. So with the May Day holidays and New Years holidays, November 29 was ideal for large family gatherings.
“Fight”
A RARE archive of events that have marked the last decades is kept in the photographic documentation “Lucha”, and we have used his archive. Ancient material for historians, researchers and analysts is a true treasure that this prestigious institution keeps.
With the disintegration of the SFRY, the celebration of Republic Day in all the republics of the old common state ceased. The official holiday remained the longest in Serbia, that is, the then FRY, until 2002.
