The Croatian National Council (HNV) in Subotica said the Croatian community in Serbia was exposed to “interpretive terror” and added that the controversial sentence celebrated by the independent fascist state of Croatia in an eighth-grade history textbook in Croatian it was “taken out of context”.
“It appears that the Croatian community in Serbia is once again exposed to interpretive terror in such a way that certain content of the media articles is not only out of context, but also false,” he said in an HNV statement.
They added that they were “shocked” by the way the content of the Croatian language 8th grade public lesson, which discussed Croatian language development throughout history, was “taken out of context and inserted content counterfeit”.
HNV stated that the disputed part of Croatian language television teaching is based on the official curriculum for the eighth grade, which was adopted by the competent state body of the Republic of Serbia.
“We are also concerned that the false news and extremely inappropriate interpretation have been released to the Serbian public by the media of a foreign country (Russian Sputnik),” the announcement said.
They added that they hope Serbian institutions condemn the “constant negative and inaccurate media representation of the Croatian community in Serbia”, that they protect it and that they finally begin to promote positive processes and achievements in the media.
Croatian television classes, like all other students in Vojvodina, have been running on RTV since mid-March, when schools closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. HNV harmonized the content and dynamics of television teaching with RTV and the Serbian Ministry of Education.
