Today, the Serbian Orthodox Church and the faithful celebrate a feast dedicated to the memory of Saint John Chrysostom, the great saint and reformer.
Saint John Chrysostom is also known as the most famous preacher in the history of the church. He was a favorite among the people whom he gladly addressed and interpreted the Holy Scriptures. Chrysostom is also one of the Three Holy Hierarchs, which is celebrated on January 30 according to the church’s Julian calendar.
He is the author of the book “On the Priesthood”, and due to his rhetorical skills, he was nicknamed “Chrysostom”.
During his lifetime, he was supposedly one of the favorites among the people whom he gladly addressed and interpreted the Holy Scriptures.
He was also a great fighter against heretics, and often preached on personal and social ethics, defending the poor and exploited, and condemning the rich and those in power. For six years he led the Church with wisdom and zeal, and in that short time he did much.
After the conflict with the Empress Eudoxia, he was exiled to the place of Koman in Armenia, where he died in 407. His relics were carried by the crusaders from Constantinople to Rome in 1204, where they rested until they were returned to present-day Istanbul by agreement in 2004.
Popular customs
This saint is celebrated as a baptismal festival in our country. He is considered one of the most learned saints, so you should pick up a book today and read at least a few sentences.
In some parts of Serbia, it is still believed that on this day, women cannot collect wool, thread or needles, because Jovan Zlatousti does not want them to work while on vacation.
Furthermore, in some parts there is a belief that whoever breaks the thread (wire) on this day has also interrupted his life.
