Tonight, the Kosovo Specialized Council, also known as the KLA Crimes Tribunal, called on the victims of the crimes for which Hashim Thaci, Kadri Veselji, Redzep Selimi and Jakup Krasniqi are accused to request to participate in the legal proceedings. .
Victims can participate in the process if they show that they have suffered harm, including physical, mental or material harm, as a direct result of the crimes of the confirmed indictment, the court said in a statement.
It was stated that victims participating in proceedings before the Kosovo Specialized Councils will form one or more groups. Each of these groups will participate in the process through an attorney who acts as a representative of the victims.
The representative of the victim acts before the competent court, and periodically informs the victims about its development during the procedure. The representative of the victims will request to hear the opinion of the victims, listen to their problems and take them before the competent judges, the announcement says.
The victims who participate in the proceedings before the Specialized Chambers have certain rights, including the right to be informed, to be granted victim status, and to receive compensation. On this occasion, the President of the Specialized Councils, Ekaterina Trendafilova, said that it was necessary to listen to the voice of the victims to achieve justice.
“Through their representative, the victims who participate in the procedure can exercise the rights conferred on them in accordance with our applicable regulations and ensure that their voice is heard before the competent judges,” said Trendafilova.
“The participation of victims in the processes is a key characteristic of our institution. After carrying out an active campaign within the communication and public outreach program in various areas of Kosovo and Serbia in order to inform the public about the rights of victims before the Specialized Chambers, “The Victim Participation Service is ready to help in any way in the victim complaint process,” said Secretary Fidelma Donlon.
Speaking of the importance of the participation of the victims, the specialized prosecutor Jack Smith said that the crimes for which the defendants are charged are serious facts and that we must not lose sight of the suffering of the victims.
“Participation in proceedings can empower victims and ensure their voices are heard,” Smith said.
