In the canton of Aargau, this happens so rarely that in the last 20 years, police officers have shot only ten times. And he was on fire, a Serb.
Swiss police officers, in fact, avoid the use of weapons because they are always under scrutiny from internal control and often on the dock. It is being examined whether the use of such force was really necessary. The judge is not biased, but he judges as if there is a criminal in the courtroom. This is how the tortured policeman who shot a mad Serb 11 years ago was convicted of attempted murder and fined.
The incident occurred in May 2009, when the police were forced to break into an apartment in Vohlen, where a mad Serbian (30) was brandishing a knife on the terrace and threatening to commit suicide and everyone around him. On the fateful day, the police were called by a woman who ran away from her drunken husband and went to a neighbor with her son.
The police quickly arrived at the scene and tried to calm the Serbian for more than 90 minutes, who threatened to stab himself for an hour and jump off the terrace for an hour. In the end, they no longer had anywhere to go, but they had to break into the apartment to calm him down.
As soon as they broke down the door, the Serb went towards them with a knife, for which the policeman, in legitimate defense, fired two shots that hit our citizen in the stomach. He was rushed to hospital where he underwent surgery, after which he entered a lengthy trial with a police officer.
Although, according to the Aargauer Zeitung, the Serb died during the trial, the police officer continued to crawl through the courts for years. The document states that the Serb died in April 2015 in circumstances unrelated to the aforementioned shooting, but the court continued to prosecute the police officer for four more years.
In the end, the Swiss was found guilty of attempted murder, which resulted in serious bodily harm, trespassing on someone else’s property, abuse of official position and negligence. Although he eventually managed to obtain a suspended prison sentence, he was fined 48,600 Swiss francs (about 45,000 euros) for committing numerous crimes.
The verdict establishes that it has not been proven that the intrusion into the apartment and the use of firearms were the only way to immobilize the Serbian citizen.
The case came to light after a deadly police action that took place in the Aargau district on Monday, when a police officer shot a man (68) with five shots, after he threatened to stab him with a knife. It is not known what preceded this tragic confrontation, but the Swiss are in a state of shock because this is the only fatal outcome in the last 20 years when the police used firearms.
The policeman was suspended and charged with murder.
According to the Swiss media, only in two cases were the policemen acquitted in court for the use of force, while in the others they were sentenced to imprisonment or suspension and fines.
