BELGRADE – At the end of the year, “Belgrade Chronicle” reminds us of the stories that most left us over the years and to which we will return again. One of them is the story of a homeless man who believes that there are people who find it more difficult than him. Sava lives in Belgrade, she has been homeless for decades.
The story about him aired this spring. Then he said that he fantasized about a different life. However, he welcomed the end of the year without direction. Name: Sava B. Address: unknown. In fact, temporary, because Sava is homeless.
“I live in an abandoned house that did not work, I managed to enable it to have water, have a place to sleep, light a fire and wash myself,” says Sava.
There are three other people who live with him who he cares for and who, like him, have nothing of their own. She survives by collecting things that others leave next to containers and selling them in the markets of Belgrade.
In summer, he does seasonal work at Tasmajdan Park. He has lived on the streets since the age of seven, so over the years his main occupation has become helping the homeless. First of all, the elderly, sick and unable to work. As long as you earn their trust, because, as he says, these people don’t trust anyone.
“I found empty objects, where I could put them and provide them with mattresses, blankets and many things,” says Sava.
He used to live on Smiljanićeva Street. I’m not sure if anyone is sleeping. Together we look for Ljubo, whom he occasionally brings something to eat. An elderly homeless man lives in a house on Belgrade Street. He’s not there, but Sava explains that he goes to look for food during the day. He sits in front of the restaurant and waits for someone to give him something. Sava buys medicine for them and takes them to the doctor. “I cut their hair, shaved and washed, heated water,” Sava said.
They have or do not have documents, some have chosen, he says, to be homeless, but most are those whose life circumstances have led them to a bench in the park.
“There are people who carry everything they carry with them, their real estate and personal property, there are people who carry a bag, a car, push them all day, they have nowhere to leave them and are afraid that someone will steal them.” says Sava.
When it’s very cold, she cooks them soup or broth. Use in thermos. This winter is mild, he adds, true happiness. More than 500 homeless people were thus helped by Sava, 53. You will continue to help them as much as you can.
He has only one wish: to establish an organization whose employees visit restaurants at the end of the day, take the excess food and distribute it to those who do not have it.
