The case of the actions of the Novi Sad police, who intercepted and rudely searched a man in the city center on Sunday, in the presence of minors, due to comments on social media, provoked numerous reactions. Human rights lawyers are asking the police for explanations, opposition parties are calling the case of intimidation of Vučić dissidents, and the family is asking the question: how did they know who he was and where he was, and why are they intimidating us ?

“Wonderful” – that was the comment on social networks about the news about the injury of a policeman, so the intervention police decided to intervene in the very center of Novi Sad.

“They were sitting here on a bench. The kids were driving around the monument, Sasha was sitting on the phone. And he says that after a few minutes, a police jeep came from there and stopped right behind the bench where he was sitting.” said Ksenija Ostojic, a Novi Sad resident.

Her husband, Aleksandar Ostojić, was approached while he was with the children, a four-year-old boy and his two-year-old sister. After being asked to empty his pockets, he followed a rough search, with a clear message as to why he was their target.

“He immediately asked him: are you a scoundrel, would you kill us? And my husband replied: no, why should I? And he answers, no, no, you know why. You know why we are here. And he answers: because “My wife? No, no, no, you know what you wrote. Do you know what my colleague looked like after he was injured? “Ostojic added.

Ksenija, who often makes critical comments about the current political situation on social media, says she got to the city center as fast as she could that afternoon. A short time later, his wife was taken in a police vehicle to the police station, because she had no personal documents. He was released after an hour, with, as he puts it, a warning to be careful what you write in the future, because “everything is heard and read.”

“And at the exit, on the ramp, one of those two says to his wife – now you’re marked,” says Ostojic.

N1: How did you understand that message? Are you marked now?

Ostojic: Well look, I can only understand her as a threat. What you need to understand is that I’m not really afraid of it. How did they know he was there and how did they know it was him?

If everything happened as described, the police should explain, says Milan Antonijevic of the Open Society Foundation.

The fact that everything happened in the presence of children has a special weight, he explains. There are two ways: if there are elements of a crime, the police had to act by order of the prosecution.

“From all this information that we had, we do not see that there has been any crime. The second time is, of course, the internal control that must react and find the policemen who participated in this incident and see the whole background – how they got to the identity of someone who left comments on Facebook, how they found him outside his apartment, if it was a broader action, “says lawyer Milan Antonijević.

However, the police have yet to announce. When asked by H1 about the procedure in this case, the Home Office was silent.
