A five-member court chaired by Judge Ivana Josifović yesterday sentenced defendant Dejan Dabović (28) of Herceg Novi to life imprisonment for the murder of his ex-girlfriend Dušanka Jocović (25), and the explanation of the verdict that “Blic had access to the Revealed crime occurred on December 26, 2019 in Novi Sad.
The verdict indicates that the defendant hit, scratched and cut the unfortunate girl in the arms, neck and chest, and that she felt “hunger for air from inhaling blood” until she lost consciousness and shortly after died from her injuries.
According to the verdict, the defendant Dabović came from Herceg Novi to Novi Sad the day before the crime was committed and met his victim in front of the building where he lived on Aleksa Šantića street. Dušanka then told Dabović that after breaking up with him, she felt happy and had no emotions towards him anymore.
– The defendant waited for Dušanka in the same place the next day and deprived her of her life for reckless revenge, able to understand the meaning of her job and in a state of reduced ability to handle her actions due to personality disorders and anger due to an emotional breakdown, but not to an essential degree. He waited for the injured party, carrying with him a 13-inch long hidden knife with a 19-centimeter long blade, wanting to return the injured party with a wickedness disproportionate to the wickedness he thought he had inflicted upon it by breaking a long-term emotional connection. When he arrived, he tried insistently to take the mobile phone from her, so after an argument, while defending himself with his hands raised to protect his head, he hit and scratched his head eight times with his fingernails, passed the blade of the knife across on top of it. four times with hands and fists and four stabs in the neck and chest area, for which the injured part suffered severe pain for about ten minutes, which exceeded the usual pain, and was hungry for air due to inhaling blood – he says the verdict against Dabović.
Judge Ivana Josifović stated during sentencing that the court legally qualified the crime as aggravated homicide, finding that the psychological motive for which the defendant committed the crime was reckless revenge, in the desire to return the wounded Dušanka with disproportionate evil for the evil that he considered. It was inflicted on him by the breakdown of a long-standing emotional connection. He added that the fact that the crime was committed in a cruel way is an aggravating factor that was assessed at the time of sentencing.
– This panel, which in addition to the above had a direct view of the attitude and behavior of the accused, considers that he is an extremely dangerous aggressor who does nothing to satisfy his needs, instincts and desires, and is sentenced to 20 years or least, those special or general prevention goals will not be achieved. The unequivocal decision of this court is that it is necessary and necessary to impose the most severe penalty of life imprisonment, which, in addition to the above, will express social condemnation for the commission of crimes, will strengthen morality and the obligation to respect the law, and at the same time comply with the requirements of justice and proportionality. The severity of the criminal sanction. At the same time, violence against women has greatly increased recently and it is unacceptably common for personal dissatisfaction to be resolved and overcome by targeting aggression towards women. The defendant is one of those perpetrators, and this company must stand in that way – concluded Judge Josifović.
Of the extenuating circumstances, the court assessed only the defendant’s age, which, however, was not decisive in relation to a number of almost exclusively aggravating circumstances.
– And the victim, who was extremely non-aggressive during the 10 years of their relationship, loyal, attached to the accused even against the advice of his family, and who understood his vices and inappropriate behavior, was young. He was only 25 years old, graduated from college, and had his whole life ahead of him. The accused took it away from her reckless revenge, satisfying her selfish psychological motivations, wanting to punish her for deciding to end their relationship and return disproportionate harm to her for the harm that he thought she had caused when she decided to continue building life. without him and away from him – Judge Josifović recalled.
Dushanka’s mother has to pay three million dinars
The defendant Dabović is also obliged by the verdict to pay the mother of the late girl Mirjana Jocović the amount of 3,000,000 dinars on behalf of non-pecuniary damage due to mental pain due to the death of a close person, with default interest. legal of the payment verdict.
The mother of the murdered Dušanka did not attend the sentencing because, as she said, it is very difficult for her to hear all this.
– This is indescribable pain. My husband died of grief for my daughter. It did not last a year since his death – said Mirjana Jocović.
Dabovic showed no remorse
Only Dusanka’s sister, Danijela Zizic, attended the trial, crying uncontrollably the entire time until Dabovic showed a hint of remorse and regret for the heinous crime committed.
The defendant Dabović is also bound by the verdict to compensate the bookmaker, whom he robbed the day before the crime.
Let us remind you that this is the second life sentence that was imposed in Serbia after the law change. The first to be sentenced was Ninoslav Jovanović from Malča, convicted of kidnapping and abusing a Niš girl.
