PRIBOJ – After Lim flooded hectares of farmland in Prijepolje municipality due to heavy rains and sudden snow melt in Montenegro, the water level of this river dropped to normal, but devastating images remained behind the incoming water. In the early days of the new 2021, a floating landfill again appeared on Lake Potpećko near Priboj, and once one of the cleanest rivers remains invisible to garbage.

“The belt around the dam at Potpeć, as well as the shoreline, is covered with hundreds of cubic meters of waste that Lim collected from various unsanitary landfills located in its upper reaches. Forty thousand cubic meters of garbage floats through Lim every year According to the experts who examined it, about 40 “Percent of the waste sinks, 20 percent remains on the banks and 40 percent passes through water and very often causes problems in the operation of the” Potpec Hydroelectric Plant “The recent floods have only worsened the very difficult situation,” said Goran Rekovic, president of the Priboj Municipality Environmental Protection Fund.

The sea of garbage in the Lim is not a rare occurrence and only during 2020 could it be seen several times. The biggest problem for this amount of waste regulations is the Stanjevina landfill, which was closed a month ago after a long time. Construction of a cable that would collect garbage also began this summer. Although this project was scheduled to take place at the end of last year, due to lack of financial resources, the works were delayed.

“We received a promise from the line minister that the state will provide money for the cable and that the works will continue in mid-January. For now, that is the only way to prevent so much garbage from entering Lake Potpec.”

With the installation of the cable, a big problem is solved, which is faced by the newly built fishing village, but also by the municipalities of Priboj and neighboring Rudo, where the largest amount of garbage is stored on the coasts of Lima. This problem will finally be solved by regular cleaning of cable debris, “said Siniša Laković, president of the Environmental Project” Jastreb “.

The Montenegrin flood wave brings with it garbage cans, which then head towards the Drina, then the Sava and finally Belgrade, confirming the multiple importance of finally solving this environmental problem.
