The Agency for Medicines and Medical Devices (ALIMS) has given permission for the importation of the Pfizer vaccine, and the first 5,000 doses will arrive in Serbia next week, said provincial health secretary Zoran Gojković. He also said that the vaccine sample from that stretch will first undergo further testing at the ALIMS National Laboratory, after which the Pfizer vaccine should receive formal approval for use in Serbia. He also said that the population immunization plan is coming to an end, and that the first vaccine must first be received by users of nursing homes.
Gojković told the crisis staff press conference that the first batch of 5,000 Pfizer vaccines will arrive in Serbia next week, and the sample from that tranche will first undergo further testing at the ALIMS National Laboratory.
“After that, we will be able to offer the vaccine, in the form prescribed by law, to all citizens of Serbia who are interested in it,” said the provincial secretary, emphasizing that formal approval of the Pfizer vaccine is a matter of days.
However, not all interested people will be able to receive the vaccine right away. According to Gojković, the working group of the Ministry of Health has been working on the immunization plan for the population for three months, which is nearing completion and which, as announced, will soon be presented to the public.
“It is not so simple that we can explain it in one, two, three sentences. We are trying to do it all, it is a huge job to deliver vaccines, store them, store them, store them and transfer them to end users. It is extremely complicated and complex process. Gojkovic said.
What is already known, however, is that the vaccine, as in Britain, will first be received by users in nursing homes. All logistics are ready for the first tranche of 5,000 Pfizer vaccines, assures the provincial secretary.
“They are only the first 5,000, another 5,000 that will arrive by the end of the year and 350,000 in the first quarter (2021). We expect especially in January because we have that instruction from the factory. The first priority is to bring the vaccine to people in homes seniors. “Don’t take my word for it, I think we have about 14,000 users. You cannot vaccinate 14,000 on the same day, it takes a period of 15, 20, a month for everyone to be vaccinated, “he said.
According to Gojković, Serbia is one of the first five countries in the world to sign a contract with Pfizer, and a total of 1.8 million doses of vaccines will be purchased from that company, for which, he said, an advance was paid.
“What is a curiosity and what will put the health system in an exceptional test is the vaccination of a large number of people, since it must be administered under certain specific conditions. At minus 70, minus 80C the vaccine is delivered, and when it is taken out of the freezer it is necessary in a short time, yes, yes ”, recalled the provincial secretary.
At the same time, ALIMS is evaluating the Russian vaccine Sputnik V, and Gojković said that state leaders will try to acquire all vaccines or drugs that exist on the world market and that the services of national experts consider that they would be useful.
