Dobrosav Gavrić (45), who was sentenced to 35 years in prison in Serbia for the murders of Željko Ražnatović Arkan, Milenko Mandić and Dragan Garić, again applied for asylum to a court in the Republic of South Africa and presented new documentation and evidence indicating that in the homeland life is in danger!
It should be recalled that the Cape Town court gave its consent for Gavric to be extradited to Serbia in February, but, as his defense lawyer Veljko Delibasic confirmed to Kurir, the legal battle is not over. This decision, along with new documentation, was appealed. – We hope that the court of the Republic of South Africa will accept the appeal and not extradite Gavrić to Serbia – says Delibašić.
More people killed
Gavric was arrested in South Africa in 2011 and has been in custody ever since. Serbia immediately requested extradition, but Gavric repeatedly noted that he was seeking asylum, claiming that if he were extradited, his life in Serbia would be in danger due to “Arkan’s avengers”. Apparently, due to the triple murder at “Intercontinental” on January 15, 2000, several people died. – One of the reasons why Gavric applies for asylum is the fact that his life in Serbia is in danger. As evidence, we present final judgments of the Belgrade Special Court, which found that a large number of people died for this reason. Final verdicts against members of the Zemun clan and several other verdicts were presented to the South African court, as confirmed by Kurir’s lawyer Veljko Delibašić.
It should be remembered that the verdicts presented by Gavric convicted members of the Zemun clan for the murder of Branko Jeftovic Jorge, Zoran Uskokovic Skolet, as well as for the assassination attempts of Andrija Draskovic, Zoran Nedovic Shok and others who they considered responsible for the murder. liquidation of Zeljko Raznatovic.
Testimonies of “citizens of Zemun”
One of the collaborating witnesses, Miladin Suvajdzic, spoke about it in court. He then accused the former JSO commander, Milorad Ulemek Legija, who is serving a 40-year sentence, of ordering “Zemunci” to avenge Arkan’s murder. – Dušan Spasojević, the deceased, told us that Legija ordered revenge for the murder of Ražnatović – said the associate witness. A member of the Zemun clan, Sretko Kalinic, also admitted to the Special Court that he killed Branko Jeftovic Jorga in 2004 and that he participated in the assassination attempts on Andrija Draskovic and Zoran Nedovic Shok. He said those murders should have been revenge for “Intercontinental.”
Two reasons
He claims to have been illegally convicted
According to Veljko Delibasic, Gavric’s lawyer, in addition to suspecting that his life would be in danger in Serbia, his client seeks asylum in South Africa, also because he did not have a legal and fair trial in Serbia. – Another reason why you ask not to be extradited to Serbia is Gavrić’s own case. The law was not respected during the trial, many evidence was destroyed, some were illegal. The trial was neither legal nor fair, so we presented the full documentation of Gavrić’s proceeding to the court, from where it can be seen, says the lawyer.
