A great and forgotten tragedy on New Year’s Eve, in which eight young people from the Posusje municipality lost their lives, reminded the inhabitants of Posavina of the tragic event of Donja Mahala in the Orasje municipality.
At around the same time in the last hours of 2016, two 21-year-old girls, Marija Damjanović and her friend Magdalena Dominović from the outskirts of Split, died in the family home as a result of gas suffocation.
The girls lived and worked in Vienna, and they came to Donja Mahal to welcome the New Year 2017.
The sad news from Posušje reminded her of Marija’s neighbor, Ljubica Damjanović, and aroused emotions in her about Marija as a beautiful and always smiling girl, writes Večernji list.
– He had a circle of friends and family so he loved to return to his native Posavina. She arrived with a friend from Split, her friend Magdalena, shortly before midnight and agreed with the neighbors having coffee on New Year’s Eve with her friends and everything was ready to have a good time – recalled Ljubica.
Shortly after midnight, the girls went to sleep, and since the night was very cold, the room in which they slept was heated by a gas heater.
– Dad first called them in the morning to come to the house for coffee, but since they did not answer, he went to the room and saw through the window that they were immobile. He called to them in vain and then broke down the front door. Terrible! When they told us, at first I didn’t believe it was true – says Josip, Marija’s younger brother from Večernji.
Maria and Magdalena are friends from school, they were in the same class in Vienna and they were best friends. The unbreakable friendship ended in a common death, in a way that no one at Posavina remembers.
Marija was buried in the Karaula cemetery in Donja Mahala, and more than 2,000 neighbors, friends and acquaintances of the Damjanović family accompanied her to the last rest with her family.
