Now that humanity has been affected by the largest pandemic in the past hundred years, the vaccine is once again one of the most spoken words in the public. For centuries infectious diseases have been something that has affected humanity, brought fear to its bones and created an uncertain future. All that, the vaccines changed.
Since English country doctor Edward Jenner successfully implemented the vaccination process and established immunology, vaccination, and disease prevention as a specific medical discipline, humanity has slowly begun to understand that infectious diseases are not only treatable but they can also be prevented. They were no longer given supernatural properties, so the old grandmother, in the Serbian tradition, was called the “plague”, which transmits the plague very quickly.
The role of vaccines: from the generals and smallpox to the doorstep
In the last century, some very serious infectious diseases, eradicated by vaccination, have also been forgotten. The last case of diphtheria, a serious infectious disease, was recorded in Serbia in 1980 and polio in 1996.
When the smallpox epidemic broke out in Yugoslavia in 1972, which director Goran Markovic perpetuated in the movie Variola vera, only two doctors were able to identify the disease: Professor Miomir Kecmanovic and Assistant Professor Vojislav Suvakovic. specializing in India and seeing what the disease looks like.
It is probably also rare in Europe that you can identify it, given that it has been eradicated for a long time, thanks to vaccination in our continent.
