It has been 46 years since the tragic death of Milica Kostić (18), a student of the Faculty of Medicine in the village of Dubci near Brus, who, on September 2, 1974, defending the honor of her little girl from a thug of the 11th floor of the Rubin Tower in Kruševac, jumped to his death. In this way, Milica joined the ranks of those girls who willingly embraced death while preserving their virginity.
In his memory, in the village of Dubci, the Sacred Liturgy and commemoration were held today at the Strojinci Cemetery. This tragic event attracted a great deal of attention from the Yugoslav public at that time, and at that time demonstrations were organized in Kruševac against the perpetrators, who were later sentenced to several years in prison.
Defendant M. Mađarac, T. Ž. Nikolić, Z. Ivanović, S. Trifunović and at that time the minor SV were sentenced to prison terms for the death of Milica Kostić. The details of this monstrous case have been largely clarified, thanks to the victim himself, because Milica delivered a statement to judicial investigators at the dying hospital.
That fateful Monday, September 2, 1974, Milica was intercepted by one of the thugs near Fontana Square and asked him to accompany him to the Rubin’s Tower apartment and from there call his girlfriend, whose parents are very strict. Without realizing anything, Milica left, and when he entered the apartment on the 11th floor, his agony began.
She said the young man forcibly dragged her into a locked room and told her that several other young men were waiting for her in the hallway. She demanded that she take off her clothes, because there is no other way out …
Milica, however, categorically refused, asking him not to do it and to let her go. She defended herself and cried, and when she felt that the first assailant hesitated a bit, because she opened the door for a moment and told her friends to let her go, because she was innocent, Milica ran to the window and jumped from the 11th floor of the Ruby Tower.
Milica was taken to the hospital unconscious. After about twenty minutes, the young inspector Dobrivoje Stefanović arrived in front of the building. Seeing a broken canopy, a broken chair and one of Milica’s sandals, she did not stay there, but, at the invitation of surgeon Petar Mašić, rushed to the hospital.
According to Dobrivoje, the girl “had freckles on her face. She was lying on her back and occasionally opened her eyes and lost consciousness during the conversation. She had no swelling or wounds on her face at the time. The doctor told me she had internal injuries and it wouldn’t last long. ” “She had a blurry gaze into emptiness. Her speech was intermittent, she could barely speak, even intermittently. She had a terrifying voice, like a doe. She didn’t have the strength to cry in pain. She gave the impression of a. last breath. “
Milica managed to give a statement to the inspector. Their conversation went like this:
He asked, “Where have you been?”
Milica said: “I was at school. With my friends … They should have had something – like a literate person. After this he lost consciousness. Then he woke up again and said:” I went with a boy to the eleventh floor to call to his girlfriend . “
Inspector: “And what did he do?”
“That guy told me that girl has strict parents and that I should call her.”
Then he fell asleep again. After a few minutes, he woke up and said, “We were on the eleventh floor.”
“How do you know?” asked the inspector. He said when he got out, he saw her in the elevator.
“Did you jump on your own or did someone push you?”
She said, “I jumped out the window on my own.”
He asked, “Why?”
She said, “I couldn’t take it anymore … That’s the only way I could save my honor.”
Then he fell into a deep coma. She passed away two days later in Kruševac hospital, and her tragic fate still causes a wave of emotions in all who hear her.
The body of Milica Kostić was taken from her home, after the Orthodox funeral, deposited in the grave on Thursday, September 5, 1974, her face could be seen through the glass of the inner coffin. A girl’s funeral, it has long been said, is like a wedding procession. So it was in the 74th year in the village of Strojinci in the municipality of Brus, on September 5, when an adolescent Milica Kostić (18) was buried, who jumped from the 11th floor of the Rubin Tower in Kruševac, sacrificing her life so as not to be raped. Exactly 46 years ago, on this day, Milica consciously decided not to allow the five young men to do what they intended.
