The “Let’s not drown Belgrade” initiative organized a screening of the film “The Great Dictator” on the wall of the Voždovac cinema, closed for a long time, in order to point out the lack of cultural content and facilities in this large Belgrade municipality.

“Voždovac is one of the largest municipalities in Belgrade, with a population of 160,000 inhabitants and an area of 158 square kilometers. There is not a single cultural facility in all this area and for all these people who live in the municipality. There is none cultural facility on the territory of Voždovac, cultural center or any space in which cultural events, film screenings, concerts or exhibitions are held, ”stated the Local Group of the initiative Let’s not drown Belgrade of Voždovac.

Cinema “Voždovac”, founded in 1946, was a place of worship in the past, he recalled the initiative and added that the space of just under a thousand square meters, in addition to the basic purpose of showing films, also served as a cultural center in a broadest sense.

“Due to the negligence of the authorities, but also of the residents, this cult building, dilapidated and sad to look at, is a reminder of much better times,” the statement said.

The Let’s Not Drown Belgrade initiative claims that it advocates that quality cultural content should be available to all citizens, and it is obvious that the municipality of Voždovac is one of the most difficult examples. “To achieve this, it is necessary to work on the reaffirmation of cultural centers, cultural centers and other neglected spaces in municipalities outside the city center,” he added.

Let’s not drown Belgrade also stated that it believes that the City Council should establish a registry of publicly owned spaces and offer them for use to the civil sector, that is, change their purpose so that they meet the needs of citizens and the community in which they are located. locate. Abandoned and disused spaces, the initiative added, could be turned into retirement clubs, youth and community centers, libraries or cinemas.
