At the very entrance of Majske Poljane, it is clear that this place was the most affected by the earthquake. In a place with only 195 inhabitants, five deaths have been confirmed. Wherever you turn your head, the scenes are apocalyptic and horror-like.
As the Croatian “Jutranji lisr” writes, there is no house in Slea that is not completely damaged: walls have cracked, parted from each other, roofs have collapsed, entire balconies have collapsed and even those houses where it doesn’t look like that from the inside have been cut in half. A large number of houses have been completely razed.
– We have nothing to say to you, everything will be clear if you only take photos of the houses – the desperate locals who welcomed the journalists at the entrance of the village tell “Jutarnji list”.
They point to an old town house, a building that once housed a store, a post office, and everything. That building is now just a pile of construction material.
– But, fortunately, no one lived in it. Yesterday, after the first earthquake, everything was fine, there was only minor damage to the houses. We, for example, had already managed to repair our roof. Although, it’s true, we don’t sleep all night out of fear. And then at noon we were surprised by a new earthquake, which destroyed everything – says a local woman, adding that she does not know where she will sleep tonight, considering that it is not safe to enter her house.
Upon arrival in the village, the locals welcomed the team of journalists with the information that the first victim was already known, a 20-year-old who was found dead in one of the many collapsed houses. Two people, as they say from “Jutarnji lisr”, were taken alive and several of them are being searched.
There are also two bulldozers on Majska Poljana hill who are trying to clear the piles of rubble, bricks, large and small furniture, and under them they are trying to find the victim. Neighbors, family, godparents, the Red Christ gathered, and there is also the police.
A father and son were in the house, and the police confirmed that they found the father dead, and after about half an hour of digging with a bulldozer, the body of the son, a young man, was also found.
Everyone is devastated, scared, panicky, crying. As this action continued, the HGSS went with the dogs to another house just under a kilometer away, which was also completely demolished, and there were allegedly two people in it. It was later confirmed that there were also two victims there.
There are shocking scenes everywhere in the vicinity of Petrinja. The roads and bridge were damaged making it difficult to drive and the river of cars is heading towards Petrinja. There is also no toll. Along the road in Glina, there are five rooms of the home for the elderly Kuzmić, who are sitting in wheelchairs. Next to them is the Kuzmic family, who own the house.
– The roof of our house was damaged by the first earthquake, but we repaired everything very quickly. Now, however, the damage is much greater and we are left outside in fear of more earthquakes, they say.
His door fell off, the television tipped over, the glass shattered.
– But we do not want to complain at all about this damage, we are monitoring the situation in Petrinja and it is much worse there. In the first earthquake, little was said about this area and it means a lot to people when someone mentions them. Everyone here is very poor, people even live in houses that seem demolished and without earthquakes! It is not a curiosity here that people live in houses that have dirt on the floors. That is why we ask everyone who can help us in some way, says Kuzmići.
