Every day we breathe more and more polluted air, as are the plans of the line ministers

Every day we breathe increasingly polluted air. Part of what we carry into our lungs is sulfur dioxide, which is released into the air through the production of electricity. Two desulfurization plants are already under construction, and today the cornerstone of the third facility was laid near the Nikola Tesla B thermal power plant in Obrenovac, where the new Minister of Environmental Protection, Irena Vujović, spoke for the first time about the pollution.

The air we breathe at night behind us has entered the red zone. One of the biggest pollutants is thermal power plants.

“The desulfurization project will solve and reduce air pollution, from the current 80,000 tons, to the level of the year emitted by the Nikola Tesla B Thermal Power Station, to 4,500 tons per year, so this type of contamination will be reduced 20 times”, said the director of EPS- and Milorad Grčić.

The new Minister of Mines and Energy, as she says, is not satisfied with the pace of investments in environmental protection.

“We must not forget that the air of the Republic of Serbia annually emits about 300 thousand tons of sulfur dioxide, which is at least six or more times not only according to our laws, but also according to the laws of the European Union, to the one we are trying so hard for, on the other hand, there is a basic desire for the citizens of Serbia to be healthy, “said Minister Zorana Mihajlović.

N1: Now that you said that Serbia is violating its own laws in this area, why did you allow that, have you been a minister in the government for more than six years?

Mihajlovic: Yes, I have been Minister of Energy and Mining for three weeks, and I will take care of that in particular. Why certain ministers allowed it or did not address it enough is no longer a question, it is a thing of the past.

N1: But you are not the Minister of Mines and Energy for the first time, what did you do then to improve us now?

Mihajlovic: We have done it in the protection of the environment from 2012 to 2014. The projects were launched, all of which are now just beginning to materialize, then they were in plans and agreements, and that is another thought that took so many years to negotiate and for it is environmental projects. I truly believe deeply that it will no longer be like this.

Minister Mihalović explains that there will not be enough electricity, unless everything is invested in protecting the environment.

Obviously, we don’t need masks just because of the virus, but because of the air we breathe every day. The desulfurization facility near the Nikola Tesla B thermal power plant should be ready in 2024. Until then, the Minister of Environmental Protection has no advice for citizens on how to behave and announces the introduction of new measuring stations.

“We just need many more measuring stations in all the cities of Serbia, so that we can assess the air quality in the right way. What the ministry will do next year is certainly subsidies for local self-government units to replace the rooms of boilers in health centers, schools, clinics and whatever else is needed, ”said Minister of Environmental Protection Irena Vujović.

Organizations that draw attention to increased air pollution appeal, above all, to short-term measures, and not to something that would be regulated in a few years.
