The girl (14) from Valjevo, who took a lot of medication, is fortunately out of danger and is being treated in Belgrade.
The girl drank up to 75 antidepressant tablets in her room at the family home in Valjevo on Sunday afternoon, after which she lost consciousness. Her parents found her in such a condition, and then immediately transferred her to the Valjevo Hospital Emergency Center, where they gave her first aid.
However, due to severe poisoning, she was rushed to Belgrade to the Mother and Child Institute. As we were told at the Institute, the girl is in the intensive care unit, it is not endangering her life and she is in a stable general condition.
Did they drink antidepressants from the riot?
According to the first results of the investigation, in this case there are no elements of crime, since the girl was not the victim of any abuse, which could have caused her to try to commit suicide in this way.
Instead, and based on the testimony when he regained consciousness, the investigation suspects that he drank antidepressants because his parents, due to the coronavirus epidemic, allegedly did not allow him to go to a party.
– According to the first information after the conversations with the parents, nothing indicated that there was a psychological problem of the minor that lasted for a certain time and about which she remained silent. Additionally, there were no noticeable drastic changes in her behavior that indicated that she was unable to cope with a problem, nor did she abruptly withdraw into herself. So for now, the assumption is that he probably took antidepressant pills out of rebellion, because he couldn’t go to that celebration and be with their company. That is why going to that party was especially important for her, so the disappointment at the impossibility of attending that led her to attempt suicide, must be demonstrated in new talks by experts, our sources close to the investigation say, adding that the case was reported to the public. the Valjevo Prosecutor’s Office and the local Social Work Center, which will take care of the subsequent procedures.
Psychologists: Talk to Children During a Pandemic
Commenting on this case, the psychologists we spoke with did not want to speculate as to why the 14-year-old tried to kill herself, “because the obvious motive is unknown.” However, they agree that in these completely extraordinary circumstances brought on by the pandemic, daily conversations with children in the family circle are necessary.
– On the one hand, we have teenagers who especially need to socialize in those years and be part of their generation in their usual rhythm and regime to which they are accustomed. On the other hand, this situation is completely alien to them, from attending school online, to the impossibility of socializing, going out and all the other free activities, such as going to a training or someone’s birthday. At the same time, children in these extremely sensitive years see in their immediate surroundings the daily worry and uncertainty of how long all this is going to last and if it can get even worse. And that is a good condition to generate fear and panic, from which, perhaps, some children will “defend themselves” by locking themselves up or reacting in this way – the psychologists we spoke to say.
It is up to parents, as they advise, to talk to their children every day and understand their concerns in such conditions.
– Staying home due to a pandemic actually makes it easier. In addition to the many negative aspects of this crisis, this is a very good one, but the whole family should dedicate themselves to it, it is the advice of a psychologist.
