The vice president of the Serbian Socialist Party (SPS), Branko Ruzic, took over the education department at a time when, due to the coronavirus epidemic, the entire school year was being called into question. In an interview with Kurir, the new Minister of Education, Science and Technological Development says that the possibility of closing schools “does not even exist in the imagination”, because the efficiency of the measures that have just been introduced is expected: a partial transition to distance education.

Ruzic also reveals why the Socialists want an alliance with the progressives in the next presidential and parliamentary elections, despite the sparks at the beginning of the work of this government. Ruzic calls the event in which Energy Minister Zorana Mihajlovic expels long-term “Srbijagas” director Dusan Bajatovic from the meeting – a creative disagreement.

New measures have been taken on the functioning of teaching in schools. How much will this school year affect and what can be the next step, if the unfavorable situation continues?

– Schools and educators have shown and demonstrated their willingness to adapt to the situation, and everyone in the education system has taken on a serious burden so that the school year is not wasted, but is made the most of in the given circumstances. I hope that this transition to online teaching of the older elementary school classes, all high school students, with the same recommendation for institutions of higher education, plus an earlier simultaneous winter break throughout the Republic and in the period until the arrival of vaccines, will support the efforts of the state and the profession to stop this scourge.

As Minister of Education, what are your biggest fears regarding the uncertain course of the epidemic? Is there a scenario whereby schools can be closed?

– The scenario of closing schools does not even exist in the imagination. The educational process will continue in such circumstances, because education is an area of society of the highest national interest. We are ready to react every day and do nothing ourselves, but we always take into account the position of the health department at the crisis headquarters, which makes recommendations based on all the information collected. I believe that the existing global measures will give the desired effects.

About Serbian football

We don’t need trenches, but a systems approach

Did you follow national football?

– Like every other citizen of this country that we all love, it was difficult for me to leave Scotland. Indisposition, bad energy and lack of desire that same day, I think it is unacceptable. We have great individuals, and against the Russians it was seen that they know, can and can when they are perfectly integrated tactically.

What is happening in Serbian football and what does it say to the avalanche started by Nemanja Vidic? – No one needs to talk about Nemanja Vidic, because the fact that he was Manchester United’s captain and their best defensive player in recent history speaks for itself. However, if we want our football to be even better, we do not need “avalanches”, digging trenches, but a modern, systemic approach, worthy of the 21st century, and certainly much more wisdom. We all like to be selectors, soccer officials and even players. However, only a rational approach can move towards better results. I sincerely hope that we can qualify for the World Cup in Qatar and as far as personnel policy is concerned, let the invited guests take care of it.

Given that the meaning of rotations and changes in ministerial positions is greater efficiency, what will you fix or do differently in relation to your predecessor Mladen Šarčević?

– The most important thing at this time is to preserve the safety and health of our children, educators and non-teaching personnel and to preserve the continuity of the educational process. Of course, in parallel, we are working on the continuation of the reform processes and projects started, greater digitization of education, development of dual education, establishment of the Unified Educational Information System, as a reference for educational policies, we continue working on strategic documents, legislative activity, further improvement of science and technological development. , which represent the backbone of our economy, industry and general development.

What do you think of Dacic’s proposal that the SPS go hand in hand with the SNS in the 2022 parliamentary and presidential elections? Are you afraid that the socialists will lose their identity as a party with such a movement?

– I will remind you that the so-called We have been hearing about the loss of identity for eight years and, meanwhile, not only has the identity of some been lost, but a dozen parties that were once relevant have disappeared from the political scene, and the SPS, as the only traditional and credible political party, from which it influences social and political processes, all in the interest of citizens. The voters of SPS and SNS are not identical, because otherwise they would all be in one party, but what unites us is the statehood, economic development and progress of Serbia, the preservation of national dignity along with the European values and the future we represent. On that platform, our joint presidential candidate won the previous presidential elections more than convincingly, and that is why it is undoubtedly a benchmark for the performance model in the next election cycles.

The time of the crown

I miss the Serbian immediacy

What do you miss most about this “new normal” that we have to get used to?

– The moment we run out of loved ones because of the crown, it would be rude to complain about something. But if I have to highlight something, it is the immediacy that characterizes all of us who live in Serbia.

The first sparks after the formation of the government appeared on the SPS-SNS route. How did you experience the dispute between Minister Zorana Mihajlović and her party colleague and director of “Srbijagas” Dušan Bajatović?

– I would not say that these are sparks at the inter-party level. I prefer to conclude that it is a creative conceptual discrepancy, even a slight involuntary ignorance of the procedures, and at least I did not really notice a single word in public that resembled a conflict, and that it came from the director of “Srbijagas”.

It is important for the state, the citizenry, to constantly register progress in the energy security segment, stable supply and execution of strategic infrastructure projects in the energy sector. In that successful mosaic, I also see Mr. Bajatović as an extremely valuable and strategically important part, just as, as always, I acknowledge the inexhaustible energy of my esteemed colleague Mihajlović.
