One of the founders and editor-in-chief of the Beta news agency, Dragan Janjić, was buried today in the Orlovača cemetery in Belgrade.
In the presence of family, friends, and numerous fellow journalists, Beta director Radomir Diklić said goodbye to Janjić, stating that family and agency were Janjić’s two greatest loves and concerns.
He recalled that Janjic, in 1994, along with seven other colleagues, “listening to his conscience and preserving professional integrity and honesty,” started the Beta news agency.
“Beta quickly established itself as a reliable and credible source of information for the national and international public, especially in the conflicts in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The main credit for that went to Janje, as we called him. He ran a network of correspondents from all over the world. conflicting parties “. Diklic said.
He claimed that Janjic “never designed” the news from the battlefield in Bosnia and Herzegovina, even when it came from Majevica, where he was born or from Tuzla, where he was educated.
“Only his soul knew how he felt. His Bosnia suffered with him, but not the journalistic truth about all the consequences of the then insane policies and actions. Thanks to his enormous efforts, Beta successfully demonstrated and proved that true journalism is and “It must remain a responsible and, above all, honorable vocation. That quality has been preserved by Beta, thanks to Dragan, to this day, “said Diklic.
He estimated that Janjic was a model agency journalist, and his death was a great loss to Beta.
“He was an uncompromising fighter for journalistic freedom of expression, for respecting ethics in journalism and for a better tomorrow for all of us. His disinterest, his willingness to help young people, his expressed sense of collective work, will be lacking in Beta. It will take a lot of effort and hard work to fill the void created by Dragan’s departure, “Diklic said.
Dragan Janjic, longtime editor-in-chief and one of the founders of the Beta agency, passed away suddenly last Thursday at the age of 65.
Janjic was born on October 6, 1955 in Lopare, Bosnia and Herzegovina. He graduated from the Belgrade Faculty of Philology. He began his journalistic career at the Tanjug agency, where he worked from 1983 to 1994 as a journalist, reporter and editor. He is one of the founders of the independent news agency Beta, where he was internal newsroom editor and deputy editor-in-chief from 1994 to 2000, and editor-in-chief from 2000 to 2007.
From 2007 to 2008 he was Vice Minister of Culture and Information, 2008-2010. he was Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Politika and from 2010 to 2016 Media Advisor to the Protector of Citizens.
He returned to Beta in 2016 as editor-in-chief. During his long journalistic career, he fought tirelessly for objectivity and professionalism in information and the rights and position of journalists and independent media. He was a member of the Independent Association of Serbian Journalists, the Commission for the Protection of Journalists and one of the promoters of the establishment of an independent journalists’ union and a member of the Nezavisnost union.
