Dr. Stevanović from “Mišović” on the CROWN CHALLENGES to come

There are currently eight patients on mechanical ventilation at KBC Dragiša Mišović covid hospital, six of whom have been intubated and are on invasive invoice ventilation, says the head of the Anesthesiology and Resuscitation Clinic, Prof. Predrag Stevanović adds that this is a lower number than they are used to in the last six months.

He affirmed for TV Pink that 60 to 80 patients are being treated in that health institution, because some are discharged every day, others are admitted.

– The situation has calmed down a lot, but the epidemic has not stopped. The number of infected people in developed countries is increasing and we are entering a period in which the epidemic is expected to intensify again, and in that way we are preparing – he said.

Silencing the epidemic is an opportunity for health workers to rest from the incredible pace they have had in the last six months, and prof. Stevanovic says he hasn’t had a difficult period in 35 years of working in healthcare.

– This is a job with patients so difficult that not all health workers can understand – he emphasized, adding that a lot has been learned about the virus in the previous period, but that we are still “lagging behind” and that there are numerous unknowns .

It says that 660 adult patients were treated in the first wave in Mišović and that about 350 were in the intensive care unit.

In the second attack, which lasted a month less, there were about 950 patients, of whom 667 were in intensive care.

– The problem in treating these patients is the ability to respond with the number of doctors and nurses. That is not just a problem for Serbia, but for the whole world. Nobody could prepare for that – he emphasized.

The challenge ahead

The return of Serbian tourists from summer holidays, as he claimed, may be a danger of increasing the number of infected patients.

A special challenge for doctors is the next period when more viruses will mix.

Stevanović says that they already have many patients at covid centers who do not have a confirmed positive PCR test, but have a clinical picture that indicates that they have clinical findings, X-ray findings.

– The question is how to treat these patients. If you dislocate it in an invisible system, you can create a problem there, because it is known that the test is not 100 percent sensitive, they are serious challenges of daily work and we are fighting them – he said.

He points out that the vaccine is the only real way out of this situation.
