Immunologist and molecular biology doctor Slavoljub Milosevic, who serves as director of technology development for a German biotech company, analyzed molecular mechanisms of infection and the difference between coronaviruses and others.
Based on that, he wrote a project to make a drug that would neutralize the virus and prevent further spread in patients with very pronounced symptoms.
Slavoljub Milosevic told RTS that finding therapy and a vaccine for the current pandemic is essential for humanity as a whole.
– I deal with human molecular immunology and molecular genetics and genetic engineering, and therefore virology, which is an inseparable part, because viruses are used as a means to genetically modify human cells – said Milosevic.
As for the coronavirus, he says that he analyzed the molecular mechanisms of infection and the difference of this virus in relation to other viruses, how the virus infects the cell, how and how it enters the cell and how it releases the viral substance inside the cell.
– Based on that, I wrote a project that refers to the neutralization or to make a drug that neutralizes the virus and prevents further spread of the virus in patients with very pronounced symptoms – Milosevic explained.
– It is an agent called nukovag and it blocks the virus receptor inside the patient, so in a patient who is already infected there is a drop in the amount of virus that helps the immune system eliminate it. That agent is currently in a test phase in Germany in Erlegen – he added.
Why there was an increase in the number of infected people in Germany
Speaking about Germany’s announced shutdown, he says more drastic measures will take effect on Monday, which the German government called a “light shutdown.”
– However, I would call them drastic measures and that is preventing contacts even in private places with more than 10 people who come from a maximum of two families, restricting travel, closing restaurants, sports institutions – said Milosevic.
He noted that the industry continues to work with the fact that the employer is obliged to guarantee hygiene standards. He said schools and kindergartens remain open.
– I would say that they are quite drastic measures to limit social life – emphasizes Milosevic.
More than 15,000 German citizens fell ill recently. When asked where such a large number of infected people came from in a country that has a developed health system and is considered a country of disciplined citizens, Milosevic said that several factors played a role in the almost exponential increase in the number of infected people. .
– First, these are weather conditions because cold and wet weather combined with frequent staying indoors and indoors affects the spread of the virus. Second, after the summer nearly eliminated the virus, people grew weary of restrictions and began to ignore the rules on distancing, Milosevic notes.
– Most of these “hot spots” come from private meetings. Germany is a country of disciplined citizens, but today also citizens tired of restrictions. Unfortunately, a developed healthcare system cannot prevent infection, Milosevic concluded.
Slavoljub Milošević is the winner of the most prestigious German awards, and after graduating from molecular biology at our University, he returned to Kruševac and was out of work for three years. Today he is vice president of the biotechnology company “Medigene” and received his doctorate from the most respected German immunologists.
