According to educators, the girl fell asleep with the other children and did not wake up. After the tragedy that happened in their kindergarten, the employees fell asleep with pain. In the home of the Vasić family, who own the kindergarten, they just hung up.

As pediatrician Dr. Ida Jovanović explains, sudden infant death or crib death, as it is still called, occurs in the first year of a child and is a well-known phenomenon in medicine.

– Sudden death usually occurs during sleep, and children like this are, at first glance, completely healthy. However, a healthy child cannot die like this. The most common reason is a genetic disorder that is difficult to detect. The trigger may be changes in electrolyte concentration. The brain has a fantastic center for regulating basic vital parameters such as heart rate and breathing. With these children, it is considered that there is a disorder at that level – said Dr. Jovanović.

More common in children

Sudden infant death syndrome mainly affects children up to one year of age, most often while sleeping. It occurs most often in children during the winter, in children who do not suck, in babies who use pacifiers, and occurs most often between the ages of four and six months.

The problem is that for such conditions, there are no symptoms that could possibly warn parents that something is wrong.

– There are absolutely no symptoms for this age. There are simply changes in that still immature functioning system of the brain, which leads to vegetative instability, which leads to a fatal outcome. It should be noted that if the parents of a child died in this way, there is a possibility that it will also happen to the other child. In such situations, special socks-sensors are used in the world, which report whether the child stops breathing at night, and the cause must be determined by a doctor, he concludes.

The city inspection was conducted in the kindergarten on Friday to determine if there were omissions in the work.

Four deaths in four years

Unfortunately, the death of a girl in a kindergarten in Zemun is the fourth death of a child in Serbia in the last four years due to sudden death syndrome. Two years ago, a five-month-old BD girl from Vrčin passed away in the same way. A similar tragedy occurred in 2016, when two-year-old Mateja Minić passed away in the “Dečji lug” kindergarten in Mali Mokri Lug. A boy who passed all the systematic examinations and who, according to his desperate parents, fell asleep completely healthy in kindergarten with the other children and just did not wake up. Experts from the Institute of Legal Medicine determined that the death of little Mateja occurred naturally and non-violently, due to an acute inflammation of the heart muscle.

Three years ago, the three-year-old son of actor Srdjan Zika Todorovic died suddenly in an apartment in Vracar. As the mother of the child, Ana, said later, the little one went to sleep and when she came to wake him, she saw that he was not breathing and that his mouth was blue. While trying to wake the boy, her husband called an ambulance. Unfortunately, the doctors were only able to declare the boy’s death.

Tips for parents

– The child must sleep on his back, on a harder surface, that is, a mattress.

– The room in which the child sleeps must be ventilated, that is, with enough oxygen

– Remove stuffed animals or upholstered railings from the crib that do not allow air circulation

– It is not recommended that a child sleep in the same bed with his parents, but in his own bed, but in the same room with mom and dad

– Breastfeeding a baby is a good prevention against sudden infant death syndrome

– Avoid sleeping with a pacifier in your mouth.
