The administrator of the Metropolitan of Montenegro and the Litoral, Bishop Joanikije, stopped publishing the will of the late Metropolitan Amfilohije.

The public in Serbia and Montenegro hoped that Joanikije would recover so that the time and form of presenting Amfilohije’s will could be agreed, but now there has been a turnaround. Thus, Joanikije did not bless the lawyer of the Metropolitan Dalibor Kavarić that the content of the last of the Metropolitan was made public.

An unusual trail

According to Kurir’s interlocutors, the reason may lie in the content of the document. In other words, the possibility of the metropolitan appointing his successor or giving instructions to vote for the new patriarch is not excluded. Whatever it is, the sequence of events is beyond strange. First, as soon as the Metropolitan passed away, the Metropolitan rejected the possibility that his will existed and, in early November, the Metropolitan’s lawyer and jurist, Dalibor Kavarić, announced that he had the aforementioned document. Kavarić then announced that he would reveal the content after the recovery of Bishop Ioaniki, who was treated for coronavirus until recently. A meeting of both was expected to specify the time and form of presenting the Metropolitan’s last will. Therefore, the mere publication of a will was not in question at all. However, a completely different decision has now been made.

Kavarić told Kurir that in the conversation with Joanikije, he received the blessing that it was the Metropolitan’s private letter. When asked what happened and we are “waiting for Joanikije to make a decision on when and in what way the will will be presented to the public”, we came to “this is the Metropolitan’s private letter”, Kavarić said: – So, in a conversation with my official Monsignor (Joanikije), I received the blessing that this is specifically the Metropolitan’s private letter, with content that is not intended for the general public. Everything else was my thought that had to be verified by the bishop. In particular, the bishop stated his position and I acted with his blessing.

He left a letter, but …

It also raises the question of what Bishop Ioanikije might value as private, if it was previously said to be a will as a legacy, about how the metropolitan ordered to act in certain cases and circumstances important to the practical life and future of the SOC. Earlier, Kavarić told Kurir that the will is completely affirmative and very useful both for the future of the state of Montenegro and for the unity of the Serbian Orthodox Church. The founder of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Miodrag Daka Davidović, also confirmed that Amfilohije left a legacy to citizens in his will. He claimed that Metropolitan Amfilohije left a letter to the people and Prime Minister Zdravko Krivokapić.

Joanikije and Davidović did not return calls or messages.

What’s in the background

Maybe an heir is hiding

Religious analyst Draško Đenović affirms that he is not surprised by this development of the situation, moreover, he adds, it would be strange for him if the Serbian Orthodox Church decided to reveal Amfilohije’s will. – The lack of blessings means that the Church wants what is written there not to be made public. That may mean that in that letter, Amfilohije appointed his successor to head the Metropolitanate, says Kurir.
