At the same time, Pakistan remained in the dark! A possible cause and effect connection has not been determined, but it is clear that the stability of the current system in the Old Continent, and even beyond, hangs “in the end.”
Officially, the incident occurred “in Eastern Europe” on Friday afternoon, causing a sudden drop in frequency in the European electricity system. It turned out to be the northwestern part of Romania, which was without power for about an hour and a half. At the same time, the voltage across the country has dropped significantly. In some places it was only 90 volts.
The European Association of Electrical Networks announced that the frequency was reduced by 250 millihertz below the minimum of 50 hertz necessary for normal operation. There were 49,745 on Friday afternoon. An investigation has been launched to determine why this happened.
Fortunately, the network has stabilized in a short time. This is solved by the programmed reduction of consumption. Countries have turned to Plan B to save the system. In France, for example, a special clause was activated, on the basis of which 16 large industrial consumers agreed, according to a previous agreement in principle, to be briefly and abruptly disconnected from the electricity supply.
This principle implies the temporary disconnection of consumers of more than 25 megawatts, for whom it does not compromise their operation, and sometimes only a few seconds are enough to stabilize the entire European system.
WATCHES AND PRISTINA
In February 2018, a drop in frequency was also noted in the European system, for a longer period of time, due to quartz watches being delayed by several minutes. This happened because the Kosovo distributor (KOSTT) constantly deviated from the work schedule. On that occasion, the Serbian Power Grid explained that KOSTT permanently took over unauthorized electricity from the synchronous area “Continental Europe” without authorization.
It is not the first time that the European network, by chain reaction, is on the brink of disaster.
Last year, almost the same day, there was also a sudden drop in frequency.
It was determined that this happened due to problems with the interconnection between Austria and Germany.
And then France came to the rescue, applying the same system and disconnecting, on a voluntary basis, 22 large industrial consumers, between 20 and 45 minutes.
That was not enough, so the voltage was reduced by five percent in homes, with the explanation that “it hardly feels, because the bulbs are only a little dimmer and the phones charge a little slower “.
Thus, the European network was also saved last weekend. But the system, therefore, fell on Saturday: Pakistan! Entire cities were without power, including the capital Islamabad. Other state institutions, airports, hospitals were without power …
Generators came to the rescue. Power outages are common in this country, but this was a “mega outage.” Pakistani Energy Minister Ayub Khan said the reason for this accident was a sudden drop in frequency, from 50 hertz to zero! Electricity has been progressively returning to the homes of this country since yesterday morning.
