BELGRADE – Good news for the people of Zemun and Belgrade! Spirit’s home was renovated after 18 years. Yesterday, the Museum of the City of Belgrade completed the restoration of the parquet floor at the Spirit House in Zemun, which is 165 years old! Wrote Belgrade Deputy Mayor Goran Vesić.

Only seven houses in Europe have this type of parquet. One of them is Spirit’s house, which houses the Zemun Homeland Museum.

Spirit house, located at Glavna ulica No. 9 in Zemun, was built in 1855 and the original interior has been preserved. It is known for the unique parquet that exists in only seven houses in Europe.

Parquet is manufactured in Belgium, from eight types of wood, different textures and colors. All the grooves were made by hand and with the help of them beautiful ornaments were formed in the five rooms, each one different.

Eighteen years ago, in 2002, an unprofessional restoration attempt damaged the parquet, and part of the parquet was irretrievably lost. Then Spirit’s house was closed.

What do we know about Spirit’s house?

It is located on the main street of Zemun, it was built in the second half of the 19th century, in the neo-Gothic style, and according to the project of Heinrich Freicher von Ferstl. It belonged to the wealthy and highly respectable business family of Spirit, as evidenced by the Letter from Emperor Franz Joseph I on the granting of the noble title to Paul George of Spirit, in 1856. It stands out from other houses in Zemun by its general appearance and its specific interior, characteristic of the rich civic houses of that time. Decorative wallpapers, elegant ceilings, ceramic stoves, inlaid parquet – speak of the sophisticated taste of the owner. This house is a cultural monument.

For a full eighteen years, the devastated house was closed to the public! For a full eighteen years, Zemun was without his native museum! Until 2014, all requests from the City Museum for the City of Belgrade to allocate money for the reconstruction of Spirit’s house and the restoration of furniture were rejected by the City.

The Zemun Homeland Museum was not important to the then leadership of the City. Neither does culture.
