The deputy of the Serbian Progressive Party Vladimir Djukanovic stated that he is opposed to the members of the Higher Council of the Judiciary being elected only by judges, because “the judiciary cannot be independent of the people and the connection with the people is through the Assembly”.
In a session of the Assembly in which the members of the Superior Council of the Judiciary and the Council of State Prosecutors are elected, Djukanovic said that if the judges elect themselves, it would be “sudocracy, state within the state” and separation of that branch of government, and that foreign embassies could affect it.
As he explained, it is necessary to look at how foreign embassies donate funds for the renovation and modernization of the courts, and their influence controls the state, so that some judges “work essentially for foreign embassies, and not for their state.”
Djukanovic also advocated for the extension of police detention from 48 to 72 hours.
He stated that there is no political pressure on the judiciary in Serbia, except perhaps from local self-government, but that the pressure comes from criminal circles.
“The conscience of the people must change a little. Unfortunately, as a nation, over so many years, we have learned to go hand in hand with someone. Our judiciary has hit rock bottom, precisely because of this way of thinking, because people think that if you have a relationship in court, you can solve that, “said Đukanović.
