The Belgrade High Court acquitted sports journalist and television presenter Dejan Andjus, accused of trying to extort 30,000 euros from businessman Milojica Markovic. The court determined that it had not been proved that he had committed the crime with which he was charged.
After the verdict was delivered, Andjus declined to comment to the media, but his lawyer Vesna Golubović felt that the court made the only correct and legal decision.
She believes that Andjus was exposed to an “unfounded trial” and that “it is a true miracle that such an accusation reached the courts.”
Andjus was arrested on June 30, 2017, and the police released a video in which he took an envelope with money from the injured party.
The journalist pointed out on several occasions that the whole affair was rigged for political reasons. According to the media, Andjus said in his final remarks at the trial that it was a political hoax backed by the very top of the state, namely the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić.
Andjus claimed that he had been friends with Vučić for almost 30 years, but that it was decided that he would be liquidated politically after he began to criticize the government in its programs, the Nova.rs portal reported.
He rejected claims that he tried to extort money from Markovic, saying he owed him money and that he himself initiated the repayment of the money.
The prosecution evaluated that it proved in the judicial process that Andjus committed the criminal act for which he is accused.
