Serbian customs agents together with members of the Border Police have seized more than six million euros since the beginning of 2020, despite the emergency situation due to the coronavirus pandemic, which is double the amount seized throughout the entire last year and most importantly all that money ran out of the Serbian budget!

Kurir’s team spent the day with customs agents in Batrovci, our busiest crossing with Croatia. At the end of October alone, more than 1.3 million euros, some 600,000 pounds, 350,000 Swiss francs and even 151,000 Danish crowns, as well as a large quantity of drugs, jewelery, cigarettes, tobacco and contraband goods were seized at this crossing. …

The head of the Batrovci customs office, Nenad Vukčević, says that since the outbreak of the pandemic, customs officials have been working the entire time. – For how they proved their worth during that difficult period, I am very proud of my colleagues and I thank them for stoically enduring all difficulties and achieving extraordinary results – he says.

The boy from the trailer

In addition to the fight with the crown, the biggest problem for customs officials is migrants, and our team also witnessed the discovery of an attempted illegal border crossing.

He is an Afghan citizen who is only 16 years old. They found him in the trailer of a truck carrying boxed rubber hoses. Vukčević explains that the migrant cut the tarp and got on the truck.

– The driver did not know that there was a migrant in the truck, but we noticed that the tarpaulin was cut – explains Vukčević.

– You’d think that no human can handle driving in a refrigerator on the downside, on the most incredible loads like muck bags, car tires, trash cans, and even among watermelons and cabbages. They also hid in concrete mixers, cognac pots and grape crushers, some were hooked under trailers and one was on the roof of the truck. We had to call an ambulance for some of them, because we found them in an almost unconscious state – says Vukčević.

Ivan Pejović, head of the Department for the Suppression of Smuggling, says that his job is to prevent the smuggling of goods into Serbia. – We are here to prevent goods from reaching the black market through in-depth controls in the territory of our country. Sometimes it is only a few kilometers from the border – explains Pejović, adding that in cooperation with colleagues from the Border Police, they recently discovered a significant amount of drugs and money at this crossing.

Heroin in the gearbox

He says he stopped a vehicle carrying two Albanian citizens a few years ago. – We looked at the car and found nothing. After two weeks, the same vehicle, a Mercedes jeep, appears at the Batrovci border crossing. We asked them where they were going, they said they were going to Slovenia to buy a van. We performed an inspection and referred it to the mobile scanner where we found an irregularity in the gearbox. After taking it out, we found three and a half kilograms of heroin in the gearbox – says Pejović and explains that there should be oil in that place.
