The city government announces the construction of new settlements in various places in Belgrade. One of them is in Makiško polje, where the largest residential and commercial complex should arise so far. However, city leaders are not disclosing the details of the Detailed Regulation Plan, so it is unclear when exactly construction will begin and from which coffers the works will be financed. The expert public reacted to the announced project, saying that it is unacceptable, because the only source of drinking water in the capital is collapsing.
For now, it is still a meadow. In the near future, the largest water well in Belgrade could take the title of the largest residential complex in the capital. Because the city leaders proposed that 10,000 apartments be built in Makiško polje.
“The detailed regulatory plan for Makiško polje, which runs from Čukarička padina to Železnik, will be adopted by the end of this year or early 2021. The plan allows for a large increase in the construction of commercial and residential buildings,” said Marko Stojčić , architect of the city.
It is unknown why the decision was made to build a residential and commercial complex on the main source of drinking water in Belgrade. Because Deputy Mayor Goran Vesić did not answer that question for H1, nor if a study on risk assessment was conducted.
Experts warn that no construction should be carried out in Makiško polje, because that is explicitly prohibited by legal regulations.
“It is written in all urban plans that the curtain that obscures the groundwater from which Belgrade is supplied with drinking water must not be broken. It is a crime and, now, a pandemic is being used to quickly conduct a public debate that does not it’s possible, because it can. Five people came, so we ask that the hearing be postponed, ”says architect Dragoljub Bakić, the architect.
The residential and commercial complex should occupy 700 hectares of public space, which is a narrow sanitary protection zone of the Makiški water source. The architect Dragoljub Bakić points out that such a project is harmful, because it endangers the health of citizens.

He says the professional public has repeatedly pointed out this problem to the city administration, which ignores the red flags.
“Until now, from 2014 to today, this project has been worked almost in secret, it has never been in a public debate, nor has any study – economic and environmental – ever been made if we can build on that place. Belgrade has also become more overburdened in terms of the construction fund, because it is not accompanied by infrastructure,” notes Bakic.
In the Makiško camp, the city government plans to do another “Belgrade on the water”, which is best known to the public for being held in great secrecy, according to the Don’t Drowning in Belgrade Initiative. The same scenario can be expected, as they say, for the Belgrade water source, for whose urbanization it is not yet known with what fund it will be financed.
“A lot of money will have to be set aside from the budget so that it can reuse what Makish is currently used for. Also, what is planned there is being done outside the law. How do they plan to reduce 60 percent of agricultural land to zero, before that? he didn’t get the consent of the Ministry of Agriculture, ”says Natalija Stojmenović of the Don’t Drowning Belgrade Initiative.
If the city authorities manage to convert the area of the water source into a residential area, the question arises as to how all those who will live there will be transported. Or it is not fixed. Because the city government thought of everything, Makiško polje was planned long ago as the starting point of the metro.
