The number of people infected with the crown will be exceeded by the number of cancer patients who had difficulties in diagnosing the disease and treatment due to the epidemic and the state of emergency, experts estimate. Even without this, our statistics are bleak: in Serbia, 37,000 people get cancer every year and 21,000 die.
They are also afraid of the waiting room.
Prof. Dr Slobodan Cikaric, a radiologist-oncologist and former president of the Serbian Cancer Society, says there is no doubt that the coronavirus will contribute to an increase in the number of cancer patients, who would likely be cured if there were no erythemia.
– The crown interferes with the early detection and treatment of cancer, resulting in an increase in the death rate of cancer patients. Kovid 19 will be to blame, not the health service people, because this year, normal work in oncology was disabled. Patients fear prevention due to possible infection in waiting rooms, explains Dr. Čikarić about “Kurir”.
It indicates that no more than 20 days should pass from the establishment of the diagnosis to the start of treatment.
– The later the treatment, the less successful the cure will be. The coronavirus has interrupted specific cancer therapy and, when the statistics are processed, the mortality rate in patients treated for malignant tumors during the epidemic is likely to be significantly higher than in previous years, Čikaric explains, adding that the danger is still major. “He does not know if the crown will stop this year.”
The president of the Melanoma Patients Association, Savo Pilipović, says that skin cancer patients also have big problems.
Neglected melanoma
– Prevention is traditionally bad, and now it is even worse. I’m afraid we will see the consequences of that next year, when we have many more people with fatter youth. Anyway, young people get bigger when people call the doctor, and next year the situation will be much worse – says Plipović.
The president of the Association of Rats with Rare Tumors, Gorjana Ajzinberg, says to “Kurir” that during the state of emergency, attention was focused on the crown and the problems it causes, and that all other diseases, except urgent ones, were eliminated.
– Like other patients, ours are afraid to come for check-ups and to go for regular check-ups. They fear any movement outside the safe zone: their own home. We help them establish communication with physicians and, in situations where physical presence is not necessary, submit findings and receive responses by phone or in writing.
With leukemia for three months without therapy.
Ivan J., who did not receive therapy for three months, also confirmed that the most seriously ill patients suffered the most from the epidemic.
– Although I have leukemia and my disease is one of the most serious, I could not go to the doctor for three months, nor could I make an appointment by phone. Since there was no one to prescribe cytostatics that I take orally, I had no treatment and my condition worsened. Lymph nodes started running down my neck and under my armpits, the disease progressed. It wasn’t until mid-September that I went to the hospital and received my first cycle of chemotherapy.
People are eaten by both the crown and cancer
Dr. Čikarić recalls that in the Serbian Institute of Oncology and Radiology, 2-3 months ago, about a hundred patients and about 60 employees were infected with the crown, and that the prognosis for the cure of malignant tumors in the people who were in the Institute at that time was bad.
– Those who have cancer and kovida19 at the same time have a much more difficult prognosis, on the one hand they are devoured by cancer, and on the other, by the crown. The results of the treatment will undoubtedly worsen. The organization must be different and more useful. People must understand that the health service is in a difficult situation. Not just for cancer, but for everyone else.
