The number of burials and cremations in the cemeteries of Belgrade in the first week of December is almost twice the average for this period of the year, and on Friday, December 4, up to 73 people were buried or cremated in cemeteries under the jurisdiction of JKP “Pogrebno preduzeće”, the most in the last ten years. .

According to the data available to JKP “Pogrebne usluge”, the highest number of funerals performed in one day in the last decade was 70 and was recorded on January 19, 2017. That month will be remembered for the fact that funerals are they performed on Sundays and holidays, which is a very rare practice and occurs only in cases of extremely high mortality.

Sadly, the coronavirus epidemic contributed to a repeat of this case this fall, and the fact that 58 funerals and cremations took place in the ten largest cemeteries in Belgrade on Sunday, December 6, shows how dire the situation is. This includes the use of all protective equipment, from masks, gloves, special disposable suits, to the use of effective disinfectants, while a maximum of five people, including priests, are allowed in the chapels at the same time.
