The worship service began at the Temple of Saint Sava this morning at 9 am, after which the head of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Irinej, will be buried in the crypt.

The liturgy was in charge of Metropolitan Chrysostom of Dabro-Bosnia, at this time the oldest member of the Synod and together with him several bishops of the Serbian Orthodox Church, as well as another man of the Russian Orthodox Church, Metropolitan Hilarion, president of the Department of Foreign Relations of the Church. The participation of representatives of other Orthodox churches has also been announced.

The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, came to the church of Saint Sava for the funeral of Patriarch Irinej.

President Vučić is accompanied by the Serbian member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Milorad Dodik.

Together with Metropolitan Chrysostom and the head of the Belgrade Cathedral Church, Archpriest-Staurophore Petar Lukić, after the liturgy, they will talk about the funeral of the late Patriarch Irinej.

The funeral of Patriarch Irinej is also attended by Prime Minister Ana Brnabić and senior officials.

Earlier today, the Synod asked citizens to adhere to epidemiological measures, and two video beams were placed in front of the temple so that they could continue without entering. Most of those who serve do not wear masks.

Part of the believers who attend the farewell of the patriarch are inside the Temple, while a certain number of citizens are in front of this church building.

Bishop of Bačka Irinej: The patriarch was a man of peace

The blessed patriarch was exposed to condemnation, they said that he was not modern enough, that he was very rigid, that he showed intolerance, that is attributed to our Church, and that some were too lenient, willing to “rotten compromises”, and nothing of that’s true. , because our patriarch Irinej was a man of peace, said the Bishop of Bačka Irinej.

We are in the days when the world speaks, shouts, shouts, writes, announces peace, perhaps more than in the entire history of mankind, and yet, in our days, not even external – such as the absence of war, and above all as spiritual peace as never before. it was no further from humanity, including us Orthodox Christians, said the Bishop of Bačka in a sermon on the scaffold of the head of the Serbian Orthodox Church in the church of Saint Sava.

He said that “people forget the basic truth: that peace between us and with us is impossible without us with the very source of peace, with the Lord himself.”

“God heals with the cross, kills enmity on the cross, the enmity that separated man from God,” Bishop Irinej Bački quoted from the Gospel.

In this sense, it should be understood that both those who are far and those who are close, only with the Lord do we have access to the Heavenly Father and the Holy Spirit, but today in humanity there is a great deception when the word “crosses enmity”, not understand that it is not suffering or the cross on which we will condemn each other, but we will stand up, when necessary, as a sacrifice for other people, said the Bishop of Bačka Irinej.

“I say all this and I quote this section of the Gospel because Patriarch Irinej, with his personality, was an active witness of these words,” he emphasized.

Many, Irinej said, are “ready to judge and judge lightly in judging others,” stating that “the blessed patriarch himself was exposed to damnation.”

“Some said it was not modern enough, others that it was too rigid, to show the intolerance, which they attribute to our Church, and others said it was too lenient, ready for ‘rotten compromises’,” said the Bishop of Bačka.

“None of this is true, because our patriarch Irinej was a man of peace, the personification of peace and the peacemaker and peacemaker both between peoples and between nations, and especially in his own people, whose spiritual father he was during the last 10 years, “he said. is the bishop of Bačka.

At the conclusion of his sermon, he offered, as he himself put it, the words of the representatives of “our real intellectual elite, not false”.

“His softness was his strength, and his restraint his wisdom,” Bishop Bački quoted, then added another quote: “Patriarch Irinej’s calm hand, without rhetoric or pomp, firmly held the helm of our church, trying not to forget the state and not give up on the Serbian people and our Kosovo and Metohija. “

“That is why we send Patriarch Irinej more with joy than sadness, and we want the Lord to grant his soul eternal life and joy in the kingdom of heaven, and that his body rest in peace in this holy temple until the universal resurrection, “said Bishop Irinej of Bačka. the death of the late leader of the Serbian Orthodox Church.

Patriarch Irinej (Gavrilović) (90) died on November 20 at VMC Karaburma, where he was hospitalized for a coronavirus infection, after his health condition deteriorated.

We remind you that the coffin with the body of Patriarch Irinej was transferred yesterday to the Temple of San Sava, where it will be buried. During the day, the believers came to say goodbye to Irinej, kissing the coffin and the cross, most of them do not wear masks, which violated all epidemiological measures and recommendations.

Epidemiologist Predrag Kon warned late Friday that Patriarch Irinej’s farewell and burial were a great risk and that it was his duty to say so.

The decision was made that the Holy Synod of Bishops will assume patriarchal duties in accordance with Article 62 of the Constitution of the Serbian Orthodox Church, and that the Holy Synod will be presided over by Metropolitan Chrysostom of Dabro-Bosnia until the election of a new Serbian Patriarch.

The Constitution of the Serbian Orthodox Church stipulates that a Serbian patriarch can be anyone who has been a “diocesan bishop for at least five years”, and the procedure requires that three candidates be chosen by secret ballot by Parliament, whose equal members are all metropolitans and bishops of Serbia and the world.
