Burazer: Serbia, far from the European Union, does not meet the most important conditions of Brussels

Nikola Burazer of the portal “European Western Balkans” declared live in Dan that Serbia and other countries in the region are a long way from joining the European Union, citing the rule of law and the state of democracy in them as the main reasons for it. He estimated that the EU will have to pay much more attention to our region in the future, to remain the “main competitor” between China, Russia and the United States, which have lately focused on the Western Balkans.

“The loans from the EU, through which the Western Balkan countries finance projects, will provoke a reaction from the EU. Most likely, the European Union will have to catch up with the level of investment that came from China. Perhaps that is the most appropriate answer, because China’s presence in the region “Russia has become an increasingly important player almost unnoticed, and now it can stand out as the biggest competitor of the European Union in the region,” Burazer said.

According to him, Russia will remain an important factor when it comes to energy. He states that the European Union, on the basis of the Berlin Process, tried to invest in interconnection, as well as in connection with the European Union, through investments in the Western Balkan countries, but as he points out, “so far no we’ve seen great effects. “

“Other actors in the region that have projects in the region remain important, and certainly the European Union needs to address this issue in a meaningful way in the future to remain the most dominant actor in the region,” Burazer said.

He adds that the good news for all the countries of the region is that there is an interest of “global players” for the region.

“The EU remains the most important player, but China’s economic influence and US investments could be used by countries for their own development. It is recognized that the economy is the most important factor and that key players must ‘break down’. on this issue. The EU is already an economy where there is competition from the great powers of the region, “says Burazer.

Speaking of the Western Balkans in the EU, he notes that the countries of the region are discussed in Brussels when a problem arises here.

“If we look at the problems that exist here, we will see that the Western Balkans are really far from being members of the European Union, so in that sense there has been a certain stagnation. This is because no country meets the most important conditions in regarding the rule of law, democracy, willingness and ability to adhere and in that sense there is a huge ‘window’ that other actors can use for their own interests, “he says, adding that in such a situation the EU will try to link” the countries in our region to itself through other mechanisms. “

It specifies that this could be achieved through the new EU methodology, but cautions that it is not yet clear how exactly it will be.

Commenting on the report that follows on the situation in Serbia, he says that he is most interested in what he will write in the section on the state of democracy and the rule of law, because those are the most important issues to join the European Union. .

“Whatever is in the report it will be shocking. If there is a real situation, first of all, the way the elections were conducted, the way parliament works and the rule of law, then it will probably be the report. more negative than a country in the region On the other hand, if this is not done, it will show the flagrant unwillingness of the EU to adequately address the problems that are easily visible to all those dealing with the situation in Serbia “, Burazer said.

He assessed that due to the general situation in our country, “parliamentarism is in a deep crisis.”

According to him, it is suspected that the figures announced by the representatives of the authorities during the state of emergency were reduced “due to the creation of a climate of security in the elections,” and to “increase participation in those elections.”

“On the other hand, there is an abuse of the pandemic in terms of campaigning during a state of emergency in which there was a overwhelming advantage of the ruling parties. What we saw in previous years in terms of the campaign of officials has led to a higher level, “he stressed.

“This year the same problems that occurred before were repeated in the electoral process, but new ones also appeared. There was a record repeat of elections in the polling stations, a large number of examples of official campaigns were noted, a great advantage of the ruling parties during the campaign. “When we add the amendment to the electoral law immediately before them, we get the most controversial elections of the last 20 years in Serbia,” Burazer concluded.
