The bishop of Požarevac-Braničevo, Ignatije (Dobrivoje Midić), has a great opportunity to be among the three candidates from which the patriarch is chosen, Kurir has learned. Bishop Ignatius is supported in Parliament by the current Bishop Ioaniki, who is currently fulfilling the duty of administrator of the Metropolitanate de Montenegro y del Litoral, that is, the bishops who once voted for Metropolitan Amfilohije.

However, according to Kurir’s sources, the Bishop of Požarevac-Braničevo can count on the votes of other pressure groups, because he enjoys a reputation in Parliament and is considered a man of integrity.

– Lobbying ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections on February 18 is in full swing. Besides the candidates that are considered favorites, Bishop Irinej (Bulović) of Bačka and Metropolitan Porfirio of Zagreb-Ljubljana, crystallized another name: Bishop Ignatius of Požarevac-Braničevo. At this time, they have the best chances of entering the elections for three candidates, of which the next patriarch is elected, says the Kurir source of the Serbian Orthodox Church, adding:

– The current of Joanikije is to lobby for Bishop Ignacio, which means that he could count on the votes of the bishops that were previously valid for the town of Amfilohije. He ranks well with most other bishops, it would be a conciliatory solution for most other currents in Parliament. He has integrity, which is a huge advantage for him.

Religious analyst Draško Đenović says Bishop Ignatije is academically strong, his diocese is organized, he is respected, but his downside is that he does not have some of the most influential bishops in Parliament on his side.

– He is an intellectual, he is also the author of some books. You have academic strength. The advantage for him is that his diocese is organized, checkered, he has the strings in his hands. Monsignor Ignatije does not pull his tail, he was never followed by scandals, he simply has nothing to complain about in that regard – says Đenović and adds: – However, the least could be what happened in the Faculty of Theology, when he resigned because he did not want to carry out the orders of the Patriarchate.

Who is Bishop Ignacio?

Bishop Ignatije (Dobrivoje Midić), bishop of Požarevac-Braničevo, was born in Knez Selo, near Niš, on October 17, 1954. He graduated from Saint Sava Theological Seminary in Belgrade in 1974 and studied theology at the Faculty of Belgrade Orthodox Theology in 1980. Ethics. He was elected dean of the Belgrade Faculty of Orthodox Theology in June 2018. He resigned in November 2019. He became a monk in 1991 and was elected bishop in 1994. He completed postgraduate and doctoral studies in systematic theology at the Faculty of Orthodox Theology of Athens. He also studied Byzantine literature and ancient philosophy at the University of Athens.

Let us remind you, the patriarch is elected by Assembly vote, and the names of the three candidates with the highest number of votes are placed in envelopes, which are then taken out by one of the monks. As our newspaper previously reported, it should be the abbot of the monastery of San Sisoje Matej.

Arrival at the Electoral Assembly on February 18, as Kurir previously announced, was confirmed by almost all the bishops, except the bishops of Australia and New Zealand.
