Orthodox believers will mark tomorrow one of the four most important holidays dedicated to the dead: Mitrovica Memorial Day.
The holiday falls on the eve of the day of the Holy Great Martyr Demetrius, which is why the commemorations are called Mitrovske.
In Orthodox churches, a holy liturgy and memorial service are served at the memorial service, in which the priest pours wine over the wine, and after the service, people visit cemeteries. Candles are lit on graves and priests hold individual memorial services and read prayers for the dead. If it is not possible to go to the grave of the deceased, a memorial service is served in the church.
According to the teachings of the Church, believers pray at memorial services in temples and cemeteries for the repose of the souls of the dead, and they also give alms.
Funerals always fall on Saturday, when services dedicated to the deceased are also organized, because Christ spent the day before the Resurrection, which is always celebrated on Sunday, in the tomb. The words of one of the greatest Christian theologians, Saint John Chrysostom, are also mentioned in the church at the memorial service:
– Help the dead and mention them. Do not hesitate to help those who have left and offer your prayers for them.
What works and what doesn’t?
It is a custom in Serbia that the food served at the grave refers to the memorial service in the cemetery.
Somewhere grain is taken to the grave, somewhere white flour cakes are baked, so-called prosphoras, cake, pastries are taken … Coffee, water, brandy, beer and wine are also taken to the cemetery … some places serve boiled eggs and pastries. .
The rule is to carry as many candles as dead are mentioned.
It is believed that food from the grave should not be rejected because it is considered a great sin and an insult to the dead if someone rejects it. It is enough, they say, to taste at least one bite.
