For half a year, the crown has been a priority of health systems. Other diseases have not disappeared, but many are on hold. In Serbia, even before the crown, the installation of an artificial hip took up to three years. How are the famous waiting lists now?
Due to the pandemic, some patients chose not to go to the doctor and, for some, examinations and interventions were postponed.
Banjica orthopedic hospital has not been in the kovid system for two weeks. For now, priority is given to patients with fractures and malignancies. In addition, they manage to implant 50 to 70 artificial joints a week, but in the same period, 100 to 120 patients are registered on the waiting list.
– What we are doing now are those patients we prepare for the operation and whose operations we postponed due to covid. We are practically now operating on patients who are scheduled for surgery in March, but that’s just the situation. And, of course, the entire system on the waiting lists is in a justified impasse – says prof. Dr. Zoran Baščarević, director of the Institute of Orthopedic and Surgical Diseases “Banjica”.
In Serbia, some 22,000 people await the installation of an artificial hip and knee. Of these, almost 12,500 want to have surgery in the Banjica hospital, although these procedures are performed in 40 health institutions.
That is why this institution has been waiting three years for the installation of an artificial hip, and even six for an artificial knee.
– We tell all patients: you have a choice, do not wait in “Banjica”, go to other institutions throughout Serbia, you can be treated there, many have much shorter waiting lists, so try to operate there, because the recruitment central public allows everyone to have disposable implants. However, people choose “Banjica” – says Baščarević.
KBC “Zvezdara” has not been a hospital for four weeks. In this institution, they will try to carry out all the exams and operations canceled at the end of October. Approximately 1,500 patients pass through the Polyclinic of the Clinical Center every day.
– We have opened clinics for check-ups and they are coming. We have the opportunity to contact them directly and invite the unstable ones, they are accepted and in that way we resolve patients of first priority. For the others, we do a previous programming – says prof. Dr. Milika Ashaninin, Director of KCS.
– From the first day, we began with polyclinic activities, internal medicine and emergency surgery, and in terms of surgical operations, initially emergencies and neoplasms were performed, and then, in the second week, we began with elective operations – he says. Prof. Dr. Petar Svorcan, director of KBC “Zvezdara”.
By the way, recently an MRI protocol and a scanner were done. It has been announced that they will be working every day from 7 am to 7 pm and that 20 exams will be performed on each MRI device and 40 on the scanner.
Each hospital has a work plan for the next two to three weeks, and how it will function after that will depend on the epidemic situation.
