The resignation of Hashim Thaci as president of Kosovo is an opportunity for a new beginning, said the head of the delegation of the Austrian Social Democratic Party (SPO) in the European Parliament, Andreas Schieder.

“Thaci’s resignation could be an important opportunity for the country to end its shaky past and hand over the future to a new generation of politicians,” he said in a statement.
The rapporteur for Kosovo of the Social Democratic Faction (SPE) in the European Parliament noted that Kosovo faces great challenges such as overcoming the corona virus crisis, reconciliation with Serbia, and fighting corruption and organized crime.
“To finally make progress, Kosovo needs to have stability and a new political culture that is based on compromise and dialogue.” With Thaci’s resignation, Kosovo is one step closer to that goal, “Shider said.
The member of the Austrian People’s Party (OVP) in the European Parliament, Lukas Mandl, assessed that Thaci’s resignation was a consistent and correct step, because all war crimes must be fully clarified.
The rapporteur for Kosovo from the European People’s Party (EPP) said that it is now crucial that the citizens of Kosovo do not use the current situation of political actors to provoke new instability.
He said that the government and parliament now have the responsibility for stability, as well as for the election of a new president as soon as possible.
“The citizens of Kosovo deserve a political elite that works for European integration, instead of seeking conflict,” Mandl emphasized.
