ATTACKS BY SERBIAN BARBARISM ON GUNJ AND NEMANJIĆ: Strong reactions to the scandalous statement of the professor on the monument to the creator of the Serbian state

The retired professor at the University of Belgrade, Srbijanka Turajlic, joined these “arguments” already known and well-known, with which a part of the national public, mostly “other Serbian” and “civil”, attacked the monument for months to the founder of the Serbian state in Sava Square. She is just the latest in a series of public and political figures who have already raised a verbal hammer towards a monument that is not even finished. He added the hope that he would “wait for the day to see the monument be removed from Sava Square” in search of the Nemanja landmark.

The call for the demolition of the monument to the great Serbian prefect, which comes from a professor and an intellectual, is considered by the city authorities and the interlocutors of our newspaper as a scandal.

– If I am not mistaken, and I would like to be wrong, Serbia does not have a single monument to Stefan Nemanja. But it is full of Socialist-Realist and Meštrović monuments, which remind us of the totalitarianisms of the 20th century, says historian Prof. Dr. Miloš Ković for Novosti. – The cliques that obviously have no problem with that, which we inherited from the era of Titoist, pro-Croat and only formally Yugoslav cultural politics, would like to maintain the monopoly of Serbian culture even today. The masters have changed, but the enemy remains the same: the Serbian gunj and opanak. Church and state. The problem for them is that it is a monument to a Serbian saint and that it is the work of a Russian artist.

CALL TO DEMOLITION NO

PROFESSOR Turajlić also stated that the Nemanja monument is “something of which it is so shameful that these traces should be erased and removed.”

– I really hope this monument will be removed one day. I will try to stay healthy, so I can experience that day. It is a shame for this city, a shame that generations will endure if the monument is not removed. Whoever comes will say: God, it’s this people, this country has collapsed to the point that in the 21st century something so monstrous can settle in the city, Turajlić said.

The work of the famous Russian sculptor Alexander Rukavishnikov has been the subject of fierce criticism since the publication of the sketch of his final appearance. Its aesthetics and dimensions are attacked and the daily political message is loaded into it.

Academic painter Nebojsa Djuranovic, who was part of the team of experts that judged the sculptural works in the international competition for the monument to Stefan Nemanja, points out that a modernist or stylized monument would not have the aesthetic content and strength of a work selected from a Russian artist.

– Rukavishnikov is a renowned sculptor and an exceptional portraitist who, respecting all the given norms, such as the character of the person, the insignia of the ruler and the complete impression of the monumental work, fulfilled the task – explains Đuranović.

Belgrade Deputy Mayor Goran Vesić says that upon reading Srbijanka Turajlić’s statement on the demolition of the monument, he was left speechless.

– It is incredible that someone in the 21st century wants to destroy monuments – says Vesić. – This barbarism is offered to Serbia by the false Serbian elite, whose true representative is Ms Turajlić. The aesthetics of the Stefan Nemanja monument to this false elite does not matter. They are bothered by the fact that Serbia is erecting a monument to its great ruler in general.

Because, estimates our interlocutor, they are for Serbia, which is without parts and without glory, Serbia, which apologizes to all, which is weak and powerless.

– They can only be strong in such a state. We stand for Serbia, which is proud of its history, which celebrates its heroes, heroes. Angry that Serbia supports us, they are threatening to announce the demolition – warns Vesić.

Finally he quotes the great poet:

– Duško Radović once wrote that “smart people can choose to be smart and stupid, whatever suits them best.” And that “stupid people have no choice.”

– In the case of Ms Turajlić’s statement, obviously there was no other option – says Vesić.

CRITICISM AT THE STREET LEVEL

The art historian Irina Subotic, who called it a “pharaonic work” that “goes outside the code of normal monuments”, sent harsh words about the monument to Stefan Nemanja.

In his review of this statement, scholar and sculptor Svetomir Arsić Basara said that such an inappropriate court pronounced itself with inappropriate vocabulary.

“It almost goes down to street level and alludes to some personalities, which is biased and unprofessional,” Arsić Basara said.
