The largest archaeological project in Vojvodina in the last half century – this is how research is described at various sites in Curug, where archaeologists have been around for a full 23 years. They found evidence that people have lived in that area continuously since prehistoric times, and have been trying for years to fight for the opening of an archaeological park, which would be the first in Vojvodina. It is part of a five-year plan, but there is still no indication that it will be allocated funds.
The iron bracelet from the first century of the new age is one of many archaeological finds from two decades of research. This is the cemetery of the Illyrians of Pannonia, according to the burial rite, unique in the area of Central and Eastern Europe. A site that raises questions for archaeologists and offers a vision of a time about which there are not many written traces.
“So far, we have excavated 241 graves, a colleague is only marking 242,” explains archaeologist Sandra Molnar.
They have been exploring here since 2008. A few hundred meters away, they show us a somewhat younger site, from the Sarmatian period. 37 tombs that tell the story of how one nation drove another out of this area. The valuable finds at Čuruški atari came unexpectedly, 23 years ago.
“We go to the archaeological site Stari vinogradi near the brick excavation, where the brickwork worked for 20 years and where the archaeological protection excavations lasted,” says Stanko Trifunović, archeologist from the Museum of Vojvodina.
The brick factory hasn’t been running for three years, but the archaeologists have stayed and can now explore without pressure. And, they explain, there is also work for the next generations. Only in 200 square meters, one next to the other, there are houses and canoes from the Copper Age to the 18th century.
N1: So those are 17th century houses, and right here we have a 13th century house?
“Yes, I said, the site is multi-layered and in each era that followed, there were already archaeological finds,” Trifunovic said.
Thus, one next to the other, there is a house that was destroyed in a fire that can be related to the Mongol invasion of the 13th century, and a place where there was a workshop for casting bronze or copper objects in the transition from ancient to the new age.
“It is only one grain of this great archaeological site, of several hectares, since the site extends here in the direction of Curug for the next two kilometers and here towards Zabalj where the Jegricka river flows into the Tisza. In these 12 kilometers there is potential for generations of archaeologists who will be able to work, ”adds Trifunović.
And every year, the question of whether they will be able to work depends on finances. Although he shows us only some of the objects they found in Curug, Trifunovic explains that the first archaeological park of Vojvodina could be found there. There is an idea, even a concept project, but not the finances.
“We need an investor, we need investment, we need some money and we have to ask for that, starting with the Vojvodina Museum, which again decides less about it, and those who decide are at various levels of government,” says Trifunovic.
It depends on your decision what we will remember the story for and how.
