He wants to use the money to provide free textbooks for primary school children in Serbia.
The “Alek Kavčić” Foundation has been donating computers to the Gymnasium of Mathematics in Belgrade for years. The next big step is free textbooks for schoolchildren all over Serbia.
“Textbooks should be free, that’s the way it is in all countries, even in Western countries. Even in the United States, the bastion of liberal capitalism, there is no market for free textbooks. We have made the market for textbooks text, for an obligation, a free market in which they compete now. Several publishers, which will sell more textbooks for primary school children. Since all these textbooks are the same, generally the same, approved by the Ministry, the only way to differentiate one textbook from another is corruption, “said Aleksandar Kavcic, engineer and scientist.
In the market for textbooks, he says, there is a lot of money, about 100 million euros a year. And making textbooks for the entire primary school costs a maximum of one million euros from the rate of the authors of the textbooks, until the approval of the ministry.
“A one-time cost of one million euros gives you all those textbooks that can be posted on the Internet. Why do we make a market of one hundred million when a foreign company takes 50 million a year from the country, and the parents of this country Have the citizens of this country paid for those textbooks yet? ” in the form of the public company ‘Textbook Institute’ “, says Kavčić.
If all goes according to plan, the elementary school book sets, which are already being written, will be available online next school year.
“Anyone who likes it can learn from the pdf format, download it, print it, and that’s the idea. What the foundation is doing should be an indicator that the state can do the same. The foundation is even ready to declare: yes he wants to take over this model, he just leaves all of this behind, “says Kavcic.
Professor Kavčić knows he does not have an easy job ahead of him, but if his parents, teachers and unions support him, he believes it will not be a fight with the windmills.
