Attic without walls, terraces without fences, rooms without windows, stairs without protection, elevator windows open like open mouths in the dark – the abyss lurks at every step! Graffiti, drink cans, broken bottles, and the sound of the wind roaring through the unfinished skeleton of a multi-story residential building only makes this place even scarier …
This is what the building for young scientists of the University of Nis on Branko Krsmanovića street in Niš looks like today, which is unfinished even after 13 years and which has become a symbol of great tragedy, after the body of the missing graduate Jovan Veselinović ( 18) from Niš was found at the construction site on February 21 which was searched for four days.
The circumstances in which this young man, who lost all trace on February 17 on Bulevar Nemanjića near TC Zone1, was killed has not yet been fully clarified, and the police do not rule out any scenarios until the end of the investigation.
“They meet here at night …”
The haunting setting of the horror building supports all theories.
– There are people who meet there at night, who knows which ones. Neighbors from the surrounding skyscrapers say lanterns can be seen roaming the building in the dark. They hit the cans surrounding the work, they threw everything from above, they broke our tiles. There is a well on the construction site that is not protected, someone will die, another tragedy will occur. The construction site is not well secured, the building hasn’t been safely completed in eight years, and who knows when work will continue, say Milorad and Snezana Savic, who live in a house next to the construction site fence.
On the night between February 17 and 18, when the unfortunate high school graduate was most likely killed, they say, they heard nothing unusual.
Broken bottles, cans and graffiti
And that the abandoned building has unwanted visitors can be seen at every turn. There are remains of old clothes, broken bottles of alcoholic beverages, cans of energy drinks, a lot of cigarette butts, empty cigarette boxes, bottles of juice, empty sprays to write graffiti …
On the top floor of a windowless building, constantly whipped by the winds, bricks arranged in a circle as if they were a “seat.” There is graffiti all over the rooms. “That team is wandering, like a swallow in the clouds”, “We were wrong and we will do it again”, “A lot of illogical plays”, are just some of the messages that can be read on the unfinished walls of the building. Water trickles through cracked concrete blocks in places, creating an even more haunting environment.
Concrete stairs without fences, as well as terraces and dormer walls, reinforcing wires protrude everywhere, each step must be taken care because the abyss threatens during the day.
Four days looking for John
As “Blic” wrote, Jovan disappeared on February 17 around 11 pm on Nemanjić Boulevard when he was returning from sneezing, his lifeless body was found on February 21 at an abandoned construction site on Branko Krsmanovića street, and the cause of death is still being determined. According to the first information, the death was caused by a fall from a height, and for now no scenario is excluded.
The boy’s mother, Milica Cvetković, said after the body was found that she had received information from the police that Jovan had died under unexplained circumstances.
– The police informed me that our Jovan was killed in unexplained circumstances. We don’t yet know if it was an accident or a murder, the mother of Jovan Veselinović (18), whose body was found in a building under construction in Niš on Sunday after a multi-day search, told the media briefly. Jovan’s mother, Milica Cvetković, also claimed that an autopsy on the young man’s body is underway, which she said will provide answers.
– I appeal to the media to refrain from announcing that Jovan committed suicide. On behalf of the family, I thank everyone who was with us in the previous days – said Jovan’s mother.
The prosecution is gathering evidence
The Higher Public Ministry of Nis says that more investigation and evidence gathering actions were ordered to clarify the fact.
– Upon receiving the notification that the body of a man was in the building, the Deputy Superior Prosecutor conducted an investigation and ordered the recognition and autopsy of the body, toxicological analysis of blood and recording of nearby security cameras, all in rule for determining the circumstances of death. After obtaining this evidence and analysis, more movements of the VJT will follow, says the spokesman for the Superior Prosecutor’s Office, Borislav Radonjić.
