“I drank a glass of brandy with my morning coffee. I immediately felt something was wrong. The nausea started, I could barely catch my breath. I was suffocating. It knocked me down. My vision started to blur. What minute later the fight started. for life. I survived, but went blind, “says Ivan Vasić (45) from Gračanica.
Ivan’s confession is terrible. He lost his eyesight from the brandy, but people even died from the same drink.
Let us remind you that as a result of the consumption of brandy, which was sold by an Albanian from Orahovac, seven people were poisoned, of which up to five died.
“I never drank much alcohol, I liked having a cup or two with my morning coffee. It was like this on June 8. That cup almost cost me my head. From the poison I drank, I was completely blind. It’s hard, very difficult”, Ivan told the Informant.
The most difficult thing for him is that he cannot see his two daughters Jana (4) and Lena (6) grow up.
“I can’t even play with the children. I am struggling to get out of this situation, the doctors in Russia encouraged us when they said there was a possibility of regaining my sight. To see again, I will have to have surgery in Russia.” “I need about 30,000 euros. I will have to operate at least five times, and each operation costs five thousand five hundred euros,” says Iván.
The towns do not have that money. They managed to collect a small part. There were actions in the city, good people donated everything they could.
In mid-June, the Kosovo police arrested an Albanian from Rahovec / Orahovac who was selling defective brandy in Kosovo and Metohija. The price of one euro per liter attracted many. Shortly after questioning, we learned, the brandy vendor was released.
“There were no stickers on those bottles and now that is supposedly the reason why they cannot sue him. I feel sorry for the people who were poisoned and died. God looked at me and I stayed alive,” he says.
Vasic should go to Russia for the first surgery in early October. Until this accident, he was working at a gas station. Spend time in hospitals and at home.
“I have great support from my family. I cannot accept that I will never see them again, so I am struggling. I believe that I will be able, with the help of human people, to provide funds for operations,” says Iván.
The mayor of Gracanica, Srdjan Popovic, said that the local self-government is with Ivan and that he will help according to his possibilities. He hopes citizens will help too.
“Thank God there is hope that Ivan will regain his sight. It is up to all of us to help him raise money,” Popovic said.

The identity of the Albanian who was selling poisoned brandy in the Serbian communities of Kosovo and Metohija was revealed thanks to a number found on the phone of one of the deceased. – The police found a mobile phone number that was stored with the name “Rakavac brandy and wine”. That led investigating bodies to the suspect who sold poisonous brandy to citizens, said Avni Zahiti, a police officer in Vushtrri. However, by decision of the judge, the suspect was released.
