On October 10, 2020, customs officials, in cooperation with the police, prevented an attempt to smuggle gold jewelery and branded watches, the originality of which is suspected, at the Mutivode administrative checkpoint in the municipality of Medvedja .

The violation was discovered in the “Audi Q8” with German license plates, which was traveling from Germany to the PA in Kosovo and Metohija. The car was driven by a 47-year-old German citizen of Albanian nationality, who went on vacation to our southern province with his wife and son, since he was born in Prizren.

When asked by the officials, the couple indicated that they had nothing to report except personal belongings, followed by a detailed control of the vehicle. During the search in the passengers’ luggage, but also in various places around the car, several pieces of gold jewelry and six men’s watches from world-famous brands were found, the originality of which could not be confirmed on the spot.

This is a total of six watches that the traveler claimed to have received as a birthday gift over the years. This was followed by an inspection of the interior of the car, when many different gold jewels were found in several different locations, which is characteristic of the planned hideout.

The jewels were packed in several boxes and bags, and consisted of three huge necklaces, a chain, 6 pairs of earrings, 5 bracelets in a combination of white and yellow gold, as well as four rings with zircons.

The estimated value of undeclared gold jewelry and watches of doubtful originality is over 1,600,000 dinars. Being a passenger residing in Germany, an urgent procedure was carried out in the competent Juvenile Court of Leskovac, which resulted in a fine of 235,000 dinars, as well as a precautionary measure for the confiscation of undeclared assets.

Serbian Customs reminds passengers that personal jewelery is considered to be that worn on oneself, however if you carry a lot of jewelery on you or in your luggage you are obliged to report it. The same goes for other high-value goods, such as luxury watches.

It is very important that you report such personal items, because if you do not, customs officials will treat a large number of such items as undeclared valuables. To avoid a violation, it is safest to report all jewelry and other valuables that you carry with you, rather than risk them being temporarily or permanently confiscated.
