His mother Diana and Novak discovered how our best tennis player, as a 15 year old boy, refused to move to the UK and take his citizenship.
– Fortunately for us, I did very well in international tournaments for children up to 12 and 14 years old, so the tennis agents noticed me. We received an offer to change our nationality to British at the age of 15. It was tempting for my parents at the time. It would solve all the problems, my parents would get a job, we would get a house, it was a great offer – Djokovic said in a conversation with the famous journalist Graham Basinger.
Mother Diana told everything from another angle.
– You cannot sell your soul and what you are. My children would probably have better schools, training conditions and everything, but on the other hand, nobody would be happy. I think Novak would never play for England or Great Britain as he plays for his country, with all his heart – said Diana.
Novak followed his mother’s words.
– Now nobody can know what and how everything would be, but life organized things in such a way that it had to be exactly as it is. It was mostly my parents’ decision, yes, and I was involved in the conversation. I didn’t feel it from the beginning, I said: I don’t want to go to England, I don’t know anyone there, I want to stay with friends, in my country, in my language. I would not be happy there. However, it was my parents’ decision because it was a question of whether we could survive as a family. Something had to be sacrificed for me to be a tennis player and even to move to London. The parents took a risk: they rejected the offer and we stayed in Serbia.
Diana also recalled the first winnings of the tournament.
– When we got the money from the tournament, they asked us: Check or cash? We said what check, give me the cash. I said, Wow, do you know how much money this is? This is the first time that we have so much money, it was an episode at the airport because they wanted to stop me because I had that money in my bag and we said that we were in Wimbledon, I don’t know how much money we paid for the hotel, this, that and they just said : Ok, Diana finished.
