Near the settlement of Čelarevo, near Bačka Palanka, is the largest settlement and necropolis of the world’s discovered Khazars.
Based on previous archaeological finds, it has been determined that the cemetery only covers one hundred hectares, while the settlement is almost eight kilometers long from the Gložane cemetery to a place known as Poloj.
What adds to the mystique of this story is that tragic road accidents have been constantly occurring near Poloj since the site’s discovery nearly four decades ago. Some of the traffic survivors even claimed that the dead Khazars were shown by the roadside before the accidents! – Since the discovery of the site until today, about 30 people have died there, of which 10 boys under 30 years old. They all went to their deaths in some mysterious way, landing on the flattest part of the road and hitting a poplar tree or an old house by the road.
Accidents began to happen shortly after the first openings of the graves, and the elders of Celarevo said that they should leave the dead who have been resting there for centuries and “not start evil from the graves” – said Milovan V. ( 70), a Backe Palanke resident from Celarevo, adding that every year on the day the investigation near the necropolis begins, a fog rises so thick that driving is impossible.
By the way, a few years ago, the Municipality of Backa Palanka proposed to the Government of Serbia to declare this archaeological site near Celarevo as a cultural asset of national importance. At the same time, it was proposed that this archaeological site, which hides secrets about the mysterious Khazar tribe, be assigned to the management of that municipality.
However, in response to Backa Palanka’s request, the Ministry of Culture referred to the opinion of the Republic Institute for the Protection of Cultural Monuments that there is no basis for proposing an archaeological site for the World Heritage List.
Novi Sad archaeologist Radovan Bunardzic took part in the excavation of the necropolis 40 years ago and previously stated that it was the largest discovered settlement in the world, and up to 2,500 tombs were discovered, while 600 were also excavated. Despite that , this archaeological site of international importance is not fenced even after four decades, and the tombs are destroyed every day.
The Khazari tribe is described in one of the most famous Serbian literary works, the “Khazar Dictionary” by Milorad Pavić, and its inspiration was the discovery of a site near Čelarevo.
– For those buried in Celarevo, Hungarians would like to be Hungarians or Avars, Jews would be Jews, Muslims would be Mongols, nobody wants them to be Khazars. And they are the first … – wrote Pavić. Historically, it is a Mongolian tribe that adopted the Jewish faith around 720 or 730 and was soon driven out of the Central Asian steppes. They crossed the Carpathians and settled in the Danube region. They determined Celarevo, where this necropolis is located, as the center of their new homeland.
The turbulent life and civilization of the Khazars in our region ended in a very cruel way. Immediately after 800 AD, when Charlemagne was crowned Holy Roman Emperor, the French moved east. Already in 802 or 803 they arrived between the Danube and Tisza rivers and looted the so-called Avar ring. The Khazars and Jews went nowhere after the Frankish invasion. They suffered greatly in the confrontation with the army of Charlemagne, and history records that they were baptized in the Danube.
