The old house, already demolished, with a medieval doxa, is the only refuge from all troubles and climatic conditions for Milivoj Lazarević (42) from the village of Botunja in Brus, and his two sons.
This man’s tired hands gently protect five-year-old Anđela and three-year-old Aleksandar, and Milivoje has only one wish: “May his children grow up with him!”
It seems that he does not want much, but this man’s desire is intertwined with sadness and suffering, which is hidden after the year that is coming to an end.
– My children’s wife and mother left us six months ago. That night, he kicked us out of his apartment, but because of the way he treated the children, I called the police, who intervened and told us to stay until morning. She is from Belgrade and since I worked there for a while, we were all in the apartment that she inherited from her mother – says Milivoje and adds:
– That night, when I got home from work, my kids complained that they hadn’t eaten anything all day and I went to buy them hamburgers. She had certain seizures, which occurred after the first delivery. When I came back with the burgers, she started yelling at the kids, throwing the burgers at them, and I got between her and the kids. Then everything finally fell apart and we returned to the village – Milivoje begins his sad story – in whose voice he feels that he can hardly gather the strength to finish the sentence.
The third child born without arms
He adds that they occasionally lived in Botonja with their parents, occasionally in Belgrade. They also have a third child who was born after Anđela, who has no upper limbs and is in Zvečanska.
– In the end, we are alone now. And it’s better this way. The Center for Social Work estimated that the children are in better condition now than when she was with us. I hope, when I filed the petition for guardianship, I get it. I started a house a couple of years ago, but now I quit. You know, the children are small, I have to take care of them, so I can’t even work – explains his current position.
The difficult year brought the death of both parents, and Milivoje took care of his mother, who was without a leg, for two years. Now they are alone, calmer, but without means of subsistence. He also cannot receive child allowance, because he and his wife are not registered in the same municipalities, she is in Belgrade, he is in Brus. Because of the country he has, he does not even receive social assistance. However, children are always well trained, full and healthy, despite living in a small area of the house that has long been in disrepair.
And the locals of the village have only words of praise for Milivoj. He is a hero they look up to, because they know how he fought and still does.
– Children are wonderful. He personally kept them while she was there. He bathed them, fed them, everything. If you knew what kind of torment he suffered and the stone would cry – says Marija Markovic, a neighbor and relative.
She is the one who decided to tell the newspapers what Milivoj’s fate is, because she believes that this honest and hardworking man must be helped.
My father worked 15 hours.
– I did everything I could this summer. Fortunately, the children went to kindergarten, so I was able to work a bit until 3 pm Now kindergarten is not working and I have no one to leave. Food is not a problem, we have a couple of chickens, I planted a garden this summer, so we have everything that is always available in the field. It’s important to me that they are calm and happy, and the rest will come in some way. If only I could finish this started house, move in and everything will be fine, this man is modest, on whose back a lot has passed.
And he, modest, like his little ones, doesn’t complain much about his luck. With her gaze always focused on the children, whom the mother has only seen once since she left, she wants everything to be for them. I may not be able to give them towers and cities, but love will. He does not ask for help, but he has a dream: that everyone lives in the newly opened house and that the children grow up with him.
