On leaving the Gradina border crossing on Thursday, customs officers, in cooperation with the police, thwarted an attempt to transport the luxury jeep of the brand “Wrangler Unlimited” to Bulgaria without accompanying documentation.
A 42-year-old Serbian citizen from Subotica, who was in the company of his wife, attempted to transport a jeep without license plates, loaded in a passenger van with a trailer, from Serbia to Bulgaria, the Customs Administration announced.
This jeep has 3,604 cubic meters, was produced in 2016, and its price exceeds 40,000 euros, added the customs, noting that the spouses did not even report the vehicle for customs control properly, stating only that they were driving it to Bulgaria to register it.
Customs reminds that used cars that are imported into the country must have the so-called temporary plates whose validity is limited to only a few days and they serve so that the vehicle can go through customs at the nearest customs office as soon as possible .
If the importer fails to do so within the prescribed period, the car is duty-free and thus an illegal product that cannot be registered or even used.
In this case, the customs official’s assumption is that the driver “recalculated” and, by failing to meet the deadline for customs clearance, he created an additional problem for himself, which he tried to solve by exporting illegally to the neighboring country.
While trying to move an unaccustomed car to the other side of the border for which he did not have any of the customs documents, the luxury jeep and the corresponding keys were temporarily detained for not reporting, until the infringement procedure initiated against the citizens of Subotica.
