Belgrade – The Minister of Commerce, Tourism and Telecommunications, Rasim Ljaljic, hopes that the problem that travel agencies have with insurance will be resolved in the next ten days.

He said the situation went unnoticed because the insurance companies announced two or three days before the deadline that they would not insure the agencies, “presumably due to high risk.” “I don’t see what the biggest risk is,” said the minister.
He recalled that travel agencies cannot sell arrangements as of October 1 because they do not have insurance, so they cannot compensate passengers.
Speaking of solving that problem, he stated that “hot water cannot be invented.” “The European directive provides for two models, bank guarantees and insurance policies.”
At the moment, as he said, talks are being held with the banks to activate that model of bank guarantees that has not been in Serbia until now.
Negotiations are also under way with insurers to think again and come up with a solution for the agencies to keep working, Ljaljic said.
He also stated that all arrangements made before September 29 must be done because they are covered by the insurance policy.
“Nowhere does it say that all agencies must be insured, but those that it considers to be stable and that it can do business with them,” the minister said.
It should be remembered that travel agencies in Serbia have not sold deals since October 1, because insurance companies refused to insure them, due to, as they say, too much risk.
