The case of a patient in the Republika Srpska recently surprised science. He was found to be infected with two strains of the corona virus, the British and the South African strain. At the same time, scientists in India have discovered a new variant of the corona virus called a “double mutant.”
Officials are testing whether the variant in which two mutations are combined in the same virus may be more contagious than the others and whether it may have less vaccine efficacy.
The infectologist, professor Dr. Eleonora Gvozdenović said that this is a case that needs to be investigated and that the doctors were surprised because they believed that a person could be infected with a single strain of corona.
– Regarding the announcement that a person is infected with two strains of the corona virus, it is a very interesting phenomenon, since doctors thought that a person could be infected with only one virus. It is something that has not yet been studied and something that needs to be worked on – says Dr. Emilia.
He affirms that it is necessary for the scientific world to examine well what it is, because there is a possibility that the reason for said infection is hidden in certain immune characteristics.
The double mutant is a new crown strain discovered by scientists in India, and Dr. Emilia has discovered just how effective vaccines are when it comes to mutations.
– All vaccines focus on one part of the virus, on the beak, and from what I’ve read, no mutations have occurred there yet. They are normal with viruses, and that is what is expected of them. The virus will mutate to try to have a peaceful coexistence with a human being, so that it can reproduce well and so that we can live well – says Dr. Emilia.
